Gordon is NOT a mute.

I like the theory that the G-Man shut him up. I mean, it'd be hilarious if at the end of HL3/whatever game ends the series, the G-Man goes, "Oh, and you can have your voice back now."

Well, no one has ever heard Gordon talk, so how can the writer be sure it was him? Could be his mother.

It's funny actually, when you think about it. These letters are from the expansions for the original Half-Life, yes? These are not canon. One can even notice a contradiction: It says that living quarters in Black Mesa are assigned to personnel who are not married. We do know for a fact that Eli was married, had a child and they all lived there.

Remember in the beginging of Episode 2 when Alyx says "When I couldn't find you... I know, I know. I shouldn't have worried." So that could possibly mean that he told Alyx not to worry concidering he's a survivalist.

Gordon can speak, but we just can't hear it.

you have never said to someone 'i know i know' that means they know what you are going to say but you dont actually say it.

That letter is from the HL1 manual actually I think

The letter was released with the original Half-Life manual, produced by Valve, without any changes to the written letter.

Yep, it's in the origonal manual, which states that Gordon turned on the phone. Maybe the incident at black mesa blew up his voice box or something...

Do you really think they would go through with a huge science test like that without the person testing it talking? Lol

Be a bit hard to carry out job interviews if you were a mute, I think.

No-one ever suggested he was mute. What's the point in speaking in a war situation. Besides, there's barely anyone around during Half-Life, and all scientists and security guards make one-way conversations with themselves, die, or are crazed in some form.

You could speculate that he can speak, we just don't here him, and it's backed up in Half-Life whenever you "use" an NPC, they respond as if you've said something. It could be that he beckons with his hand, but as they're the only visible part of his body, it couldn't be the case.

So the only logical conclusion is that Gordon is psychic.

And it is possible to have a phone conversation with a mute:

"Hello Gordon, I've been directed to you by your old MIT professor, Dr Kleiner. I'm ringing to offer you a place at our Black Mesa Research facility. To accept this offer, don't say anything for two seconds."

Gordon is not really a mute. He's just realized that way for the sake of the game.

No, employees without dependents are housed in single dormitories. Gordon Freeman was housed in the Level 3 dormitories, #309, Black Mesa Sector C.

Barney Calhoun was housed in the Area 8 topside dormitories, where maintenance, security, and other non-scientist personnel without dependents lived.

Eli Vance and his family lived in base housing, topside. They had their own home on-site.

Yet again, Darkside spouts his infinitely wise knowledge.

Actually that's from the original HL manual.

Dr. Freeman, Dr. Freeman!
Dr. Freeman, Dr. Freeman!
Dr. Freeman, Dr. Freeman!
Oh, Dr. Freeman!
Dr. Freeman, Dr. Freeman!

You just made it come alive for me.

Now I can sing the words outloud while playing it, and pretend I have sound.
