What is all the hype about? SW: Battlefront whoops up graphics wise.

Yeah right.

HL2 is up their with Far Cry and Doom 3 in terms of graphics. I was quite hard on HL2 graphics prior to HL2's release and was impressed when I played HL2 for the first time.

And??

Does it have an awesome story? Exceptional style in level design? Feeling of Immersion?

ah.... leave it...

I find the graphics in HL2 far more realistic than even Doom 3, except when it comes to shadows.

Doom 3 = Impressive CG looking graphics.
Half-life 2 = More realistic graphics.

The graphics are really good looking in hl2, but i find the settings even better. I wet my pants when i saw the big bridge.

Graphics are great in HL2. The thing where Doom3 is superior, I believe, is lighting and shadows. Maybe it's the way light plays tricks on you, but in a few areas in Doom3 where lighting and shadowing was especially notable, I did for a moment get this weird feeling that the place is real. Probably brain going nuts from that.

HL2, though, has more realistic looking settings, best faces ever seen in a game, and more high-res textures. Yes you can still sometimes notice the lower resolution on them, but that's the way textures always have to be. Whereas the Doom3 textures for walls and random objects were very, very low res.

The animation of the faces in HL2 are the best, no doubt, the actual texture of the skin (not the eyes which are great) imo do not look as real as D3 - especially when you shine your torch into someones face in D3 (the guy under the stairs at the start - as he turns - shine the torch in his face - he looks the most REAL I have ever seen a realtime computer character look - thanks to lighting). The HL2 face textures, for me at least, seem a bit dirty/cartoony.. and all a bit similar looking, but they certainly act the most real.

Graphics in HL2 improve a lot once you stop messing about in the long winded first couple of chapters - the exterior scenes even with their faults are very atmospheric and have a real industrial edge to them. Not perfect, not "better" (for I hate the word) than D3 - different for a different type of game. For this kind of game though, yeah, they pretty much rock - and I didn't think I would hear myself saying that after my initial dissapointment. Outside I am not annoyed by the lack of geometry detail as it looks natural - my point about boxy looking models was for the LOW detail interiors which looked old compared to a few modern games. And the use of textures (for instance, brick textures on ceilings, repetitive texture use on Route Kanal ) early on did little to inspire me.

it gets better thank god.

The only thing I didn't like about HL2's graphics was the flatness of the outside of the buildings. I'm sure cutting out a parts for the windows wouldn't have killed performance too much.
