Ok so I use to have a Geforce 4400 and Half Life 2 barely ran on it but it was fine. I recently just picked up Orange Box, a new gig of ram, and a Nvidia Geforce 7300 GT.

Portal works fine but is a little choppy when I'm turning around and whatnot.

On the other hand, HL Lost Coast, HL Episode One and Two are acting iffy.

There are polygonal holes in every characters faces and bodies, along with wierd texture covered wire frame-like things attatched to their bodies and going through their bodies onto each of their limbs.

It's incredibly distracting(esp the holes in their faces), I tired switching model and texture details to medium and changed the anti aliasing around but I am not sure what to do, nor know what those mean.

Does anyone know whats up? If Portal is working, how come this isnt? Thankyou so much for your help, Steam's Forum wouldnt let me post a thread for some reason... god I hate Steam...

By looking at your grammar and puncuation, I think it's fair to tell you that we can't all have mommy and daddy buy our computers for us. Learn how to type before you post again. This isn't a chat room, or a text to your "VBFF"....Here, let me say this in a language you can understand: STFU or GTFU. NOBODY likes to have their rig bashed....

ezwider, I'm short on time, and can't run a good search for ya, but did you do the basics? Did you update the card driver after your installation? Microsoft updates? Post a few more of your specs, OS, processor, that kind of stuff...And don't blast Steam too much, it has a lot of fans around here...:)

i would do as crash recommend above, if that does not work then you can try validating your files.
to do so, open up steam and go to your 'my games' tab. right click on whatever game has the problem and click validate game files or whatever it says.

also dont start bashing other peoples pcs, its not nice and everyone cant afford the best of the best. a 7300gt is perfectly fine for source powered games.

Maybe here's something else he will understand. PWNED! U G0T PWND, J00B!

But you should really save up for a state of the art card, because the way games are moving now, there's no way to keep up. But for now, yours will do fine. I've had a geforce 7600gt for a year, and I can still play F.E.A.R. on the highest settings without any problems. System updates will, more likely than not, fix your system. If not, then I dunno what else would help, and in your shoes I'd be shit outta luck. (Which i've had to accept quite a few times... it sucks when your stuff stops working.) :(

"WAAAAAAAAAAAAA - my cheap crappy outdated never-was-good-even-when-it-was-current hardware cant play th latest games. i cant work out why..."

you know the guy at best buy said that like the purple things in css when it is a user map, he said "buy this super expendive shizat card" so i do and theyare still there. :(

if its a user map then either its the map creators fault for not creating it correctly, or you have common bug where the checkerboard purple textures come up after tabbing out.

A 7300GT is just fine, I'm playing those games with a FX 5500 :P.

As the others said: Driver Updates, File Validation and/or Reinstallation should work.

Those purple things are there when some textures are missing. If hl cant find the proper textures it covers the surface of the objects with that. Try Validating Files and/or Reinstalling.

Nice to see he's been swiftly banned. If I recall correctly, he was the center of many facepalms a couple of months ago. Nice to see someone get their deserves.

Bad spelling and punctuation is the devil.

Hey thankyou so much guys, and thanks for banning that kid. I'm sick of people scanning forum's just so they can be a D bag about it.

Well I recently found out that Portal had the problem too, even though I just dealt with it and beat the game anyways. Funny, my FX 4400 was playing the games in *medium graphics just fine. But now this 7300 is just going crazy.

I have updated the drivers, I did that right when I installed it. However I havent had any updates on my PC.

I just went to the microsoft website and am about to install service pack 2 and some other updates as well.

Sorry for bashing steam, you can imagine how frusturating it is to have a 28k internet connection, I'm in another location right now. Just logging onto steam takes forever, I'm dying to play these games!

I'm gonna install the original driver that came with my PC, then uninstall it and use Driver Cleaner and then reinstall the new Nvida drivers with updates, hopefully this works, I'll keep you posted.

I live in Baltimore, MD, about 20 minutes north of Baltimore in a rural area. I live back in the woods and I'm pretty much the only house in the area that can't get dsl/cable/broadband, I can only get satellite which is super expensive in my area. SUCKS!

I do all of my internet stuff at school, or I usually take my desktop to my to where my Mom's office is located which is hooked up to a high speed network.

UPDATE

I installed the driver updates for my graphics card, service pack 2, and pretty much every system update. I also tried validating the files for Half Life 2 Episode 2 in steam. When I loaded up the game It finally worked. But in the beginning where Dog showed up again to throw the van over the gap into the citadel, the problem started again. And after loading into the next area the characters and objects had the problem again. Every object and character is infested with spider-web like textured wire frames sprouting from outside of them, its really weird.

I guess the only thing left to try would be to just uninstall all of the games and reinstall them. If I remember correctly my computer never even asked me to insert disc 2 of the orange box cd's, but the games still showed up in "My Games" on steam and I just downloaded them from there.

Could this be a problem? Maybe it forgot to install some things? If it still doesnt work, I'll try uninstalling the drivers and installing it again, I'm reaching the end of my sanity though I'm dying to experience this new graphics card with these great games.

Thanks again to all who is helping me, I'm determined to figure this out.

ezwider, I'm gonna grasp at some straws here. Atho I've built a handful of computers, I am in no way, shape, or form, an expert. Hopefully, somebody will point out if I'm wrong, and we both can learn something...
My first thought is, maybe you got a bad card. It happened to me once.
Make sure your card is fully seated in the slot. Make sure the gold contacts are clean. Make sure you don't have anything like a loose wire, laying on your card. And make sure your card isn't getting too hot.
I think the 4400 had a 6-pin power plug, and I don't think the 7300 does. So, you should be getting enough power to your card. If you've got a 400 watt (or more) power supply, and not a whole lot else in your computer, you should be okay...
Is your monitor cable okay? Are you using a DVI-VGA adapter? That's probably not causing your problem, but I'm trying to think of anything...
Maybe try forcing a video mode:

Or check your DirectX (that should be good if you just updated tho):

To answer your question about weather or not all of your games installed correctly, Steam should have taken care of all of that...But you may want to verify the integrigty of your game cache: Open Steam, My Games, right click on a game, select Properties in the pop-up window, click the Local files tab, then click on verify integrity of game cache....
Other than that, I'm all out of ideas.....

hey crash your first link didnt work man

Ok I brought my PC to my mom's office to take advantage of the fast ethernet, although its not even WORKING right now!

I cached the files, still nothing, the card is secure as far as I know.

It came with a four pin connector that sprouts into 2 other 4 pin connectors, but there wasnt a slot open on my power supply, however their was a daisy chain open and I just hooked one of the 4 pins onto that and there is still one loose end of the 4 pin 1 to 2 connector laying around.

Here are my specs after running dxdiag.

On the device section it shows my 7300 card. On the driver section this is what it says.

main driver: nv4_disp.dll

version:6.14.0011.6921(english)

date:12/26/07

WHQL Lodo'd:n/a

mini VDD: nv4_mini.sys

VDD:n/a

DDIversion:9(or higher)

As a last ditch effort, here are 2 screen shots from what is pretty much happening.

I'm sorry I can't give you any more advice... But that is one f*cking awesome glitch. That looks so cool.

Perhaps shaders? Turn EVERYTHING to low and see if it works.. I feel sorry for you, but here is a last resort:
You can find some really good graphics cards at Fry's for about 100$ nowadays, and they run smooth almost all the time, except for every once and a while, something goes nuts and purple squares randomly cover textures in a checker pattern. It also probably helps that my machine is running on win2000 (yes, valve is thoughtful enough to provide this for us) and has a lot less OS to use up the memory.

I had a problem in Portal where it would lag when turning round, or looking through Portals (I can't cope with Portal render depth = 0) so I just set the game to:

-dxlevel 80

And turned everything down to its lowest settings. I then happily played Portal without any problems.

Ugh, Man this sucks hard, I wanna play my games!

I ended up just playing through Portal and and Episode One witht his glitch, funny... my GeForce Fx 4400 played these games better.

Oh well, I took my card back in the new box and gave it back to Best Buy and got a 150 dollar gift card, I still have the installation cd and the 7300 in my PC. Whoops! Sucks for them I guess...

I sent my computer in to get completely reworked on and everything dumped out of it and set back to factory defaults, something with my modem is messed up anyways, its a huge chore just trying to connect to the internet, once thats done, I'll try reinstalling the drivers and games one last time.

This is why I like consoles.... computers are ****ing confusing....

Too bad I dont have the money to throw down for a next gen console or a new computer.

BAH!

sorry for the double post

i figured it out

i took the orange box down to VA to my gf's and installed it on her computer

when i installed it on my computer, it didnt ask for the 2nd disc and just downloaded the files from steam or something

when i installed it on my gf's computer, it asked for both discs and installed all of the games, and THEN it downloaded the files from steam, her graphics card sucks and it didnt play well, but i didnt have the same problems as those in the screen shot

YAY!
