Got the Orange Box for Christmas - Fine
I got Steam - Fine
I installed it - Fine
I launched it - Fine

Then, I was wondering around that testing room, getting told the controls, but as soon as I step out of the portal, I get this error:

hl2.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x10ad7332" referenced memory at "0x1f878d3c". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program.

[OK]

I rather stupidly took a picture with my camera, not a screen shot, but I'll attach it anyway.

Can someone tell me what the problem is and hopefully hopefully how I can fix it!

Thank you.

Hmm I'm not so sure about your graphics card being up to snuff (saying that though, I can't find any info on it). Make sure your graphics drivers are up-to-date and verify your games through steam. To do the latter, right click the game in the steam menu, then click properties. Then, go to the Local Files tab and click "Verify Integrity of Game Cache". It might take a while so let it do its job.

Hope that helps.

I've verified portal. Still doesn't work.
I'm not really sure how to update my graphics drivers...
do you know a way that I can check whether my graphics card is up to snuff. I'm sure I went on a website once, but I cannot remember the name.

Well as far as I can work out, your computer is a Dell Dimension E310? If so, this is where you can get your drivers from.

Good luck.
