Should i play half life 1 before playing hl2 because i recently got the orange box but i want to play the first 1

A lot of people would probably recommend that you play it first but it's not essential.

I'd recommend it because it's good fun, but you could skip it if you just familiarize yourself with the plot.

It would be good for getting the plot, and then you could get the references made to the HL1 story in HL2. But you could always just read up on the plot anyways.

thnx everyone im proabably gunna buy it off ebay hope my computer isnt too shitty to run it tho lol

I hope to science it isn't. It would have to be REALLY old for that.

Why? You get it much more cheaper on eBay.
Are you taking the piss? Ebay is full of copies of the game which have that their CD Keys already binded to Steam accounts, Valve has stated you should never buy their games this way as you are not protected. It's extremely well known.

To unbind your CD Key from a Steam account it costs $10, which few people do. Selling your Steam account by providing your username and password is illegal and against the Steam user agreement you tick when installing Steam. Thus for a safe copy, buy retail or from Steam (which is ridiculously cheap anyway).

Please don't give bad advice like that Mellish.

I meant buy the original Half-Life when steam didn't exist.

Do what I did, play Half-Life 2 then have a whole bunch of questions, then play Half-Life 1 for the answers. I find that easier.

A retail version of HL1 (not a Steam or Source one) can be bought on eBay without any risk.

Old retail copies of Halflife 1 can still be registered with Steam, if the version is already registered on Steam it will be denied. It is true that you can run it without Steam, like we used to many thousands of years ago...but this will be an unpatched version (unless you feel like manually doing it with an old patch) and includes no online support with WON dead.

I have an old HL1 key registered to another Steam account like this and it also gave me CS / TFC and all the other games from that era.

If you are interrested in the background story at all then most definately YES.

Playing 1 after playing 2 might spoil your taste a bit. I guess it depends on how much of the story you already know. Hint: something somewhere goes awry

Also it's better to jump from HL1 graphics to HL2 than from HL2 to HL1

I went from HL2 to HL1 and because of that sort of felt i couldn't comlete the game because I felt the graphics were too weird!

There are more reasons for buying it on Steam. It's not like you're going to get much off for purchasing it on ebay. Like $2 or something?

I guess I just think steam's a little pricey. I managed to get The Orange Box much cheaper on eBay and it was completely new and unsealed. The another annoying thing is that it doesn't include vat in the initial price so you usually forget about it.

Do you think HL1 will become free on the 10th anniversary of its release?

You could always wait :p

All my GoldSrc Steam games experiece the elevator bug (which makes BS unplayable because the elevator kills two scienists and ends the game at the start) which I never had in my non-Steam versions.

It's essential that you play half life 1 fist then you will understand the storyline better.

Plus, you have to see Xen by yourself.
