If you are a gamer wanting the best experience, I would hold off from downloading the 64-Bit version unless x64 is your only OS. Not only does the 64-Bit version hold back FPS, at least in my case, it's quite buggy at this point. For all I know, some of the bugs may be responsible for holding back the FPS... I guess we will know soon enough when they fix up the bugs.

I think since the latest update the source engine on the whole has suffered some serious framerate drops, at least I get lower fps in CS:S now. The reviewer even has the shiny issue as seen with the water. Here's hoping valve employees have a short holiday!

and it broke the sdk... and it has been nearly a week without being fixed..
worst update ever

*sigh* Nearly a week? It was released last THURSDAY, I guess you can't count. Not to mention there IS a fix for the sdk. You obviously haven't searched for it, btw I'll wait till bit-tech or someone I know review it.

So do I have this right - even if you have a 64-bit processor, you have to be running Windows x64 to get any benefit from this update? And even then your fps will probably drop?

Not very good, if that's the case.

Lets see.... 64bit programs require 64bit OS which requires a 64bit processor.
So of course a 64bit program will require a 64bit processor and a 64bit OS>

The 64bit version is just buggy, they havn't had time to properly clean it up like you know...several months and optimize and get it to work on every 64bit computer configuration properly.

But wow look at those loading times...hell of alot shorter.

Whats up with the 64 bit version? What does it do above the standard vanilla HL2?

I know that in Far Cry 64, you could see farther and also enable HDR if you had an Nvidia card, so that was pretty cool...

However in HL2 I've never had view distance be an issue, so what other advantages will it have?

(not that I even have a 64 bit computer but I might sell this one and upgrade come spring)

Couldn't it be his CPU i mean a 3200 that's one of the lowest of the low 64bit CPU's(Bar crappy sempron's of course). Perhaps his GFX card is bottlenecking his CPU. Someone with a FX57 and 7800GTX 512MB should run this test, then I'd be interested.

They updated the engine to 64bit. They didn't name anything they changed in their games. It's a change for the future really.

And do we know if the image quality differences are something valve has to change or just like any other game where the video companies come out with driver fixes.

I guess this explains why everything is so ****ing shiny...
