My problem is when I try to play Half-Life 2, itll come to the first loading screen (after the man with the valve in his eye) and then restart the entire computer. Ive tried updating my nVidia card, turning off firewalls for steam, reinstalling, etc etc. and still to no avail. What am I to do? Also, the game totally worked fine on the first run, it just started to reset my computer from the second time playing and so on. Please help!

Processor:AMD Athlon XP 1700 plus 1.47 GHZ
1GB RAM
Windows XP
(not sure what else I have on the computer, but its runs Doom3, so it should be able to run Half Life)

well, first of all, your processor is a wee bit old....now DOOM3 is opengl and can be run basically on any video card (people have even done it on old Voodoo's) albeit at VERRRY low settings, so saying that your computer runs doom3 and therefore should run HL2 (directx) isn't necessarily true. What video card is in there?

i know Half Life 2 will run on my computer because it worked just fine the very first time i played it. It started crashing after that point.

#1 defrag

If that fails,

#2 Reformat.

No, really.

all I know is that my graphics card is an nVidia. I downloaded updates to it, and the game still restarts the computer at the first loading screen. But if I was actually able to play the game the first time, then wouldnt that rule problems with the video card out? Someone also suggested it was something to do with the autosave feature?

I have same problem. I got HL2 Demo and when I try and load the game my computer crashes and restarts itself. When XP loads up again it reports that my graphic card has recovered from a serious error.
I tried again a couple of days later and the game loaded up and I played the demo with no problems. But now when I try to play the original problem has come back. My computer is new from the store.

My System:
Compaq Preserio 061
2.2 GHz AMD 64 Processor
1 Gig Ram
NVIDIA geforce 6200se turbocharge card (256mb)
Windows XP
It worked well a couple of times for a day but out of the blue again HL2 crashes my computer - any good advice is welcome.

Okay this is an update.....

I downloaded the latest sound card driver for Realtec AC '97 Audio and HL2 worked and played without crashing. I got this hint by looking through the forum here. Try it and see if it will solve your problem too.

I'm gonna try that. perhaps it will fix my problem too.

This is the site I got my audio driver from:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True

But you may need to check if it is compatible for your particular system.

I think there was an issue of compatibility between my Realtec audio and Nvidia graphic drivers running HL2. That was probably why I managed to get HL2 to run before when I was coincidently playing around with my audio drivers. I didn't realise at the time this was the reason why HL2 worked before.
