What do you guys think about the charaters? Will you guys feel sad :( if one gets shot :sniper: in combat, or how about alyx will you actually start to feel closer to these people in game. tell me witch charater and why. and if you think this thread is pointless dont reply please.

Wel I guess you don't know until you've played the game itself. I could imagine the relating though.

Depends on the job VALVe have done on character development!!!

Alyx could turn out really evil, like a cross dressing G-Man.

That would suck if she got killed. Alyx seems pretty cool and she isn't as annoying as other female characters I've seen in some other games.

I don't like the way the characters are lip synced. It looks like they are over enunciate (thanks cyberSh33p :D) their words. To me it looks very awkward.

However, I really like the character expressions though. It is pretty cool to watch an in-game character and you can "feel" their emotion through their body language. I think that is one of the coolest things about Half-Life 2.

Yeah, especially with the mixture of the "emotional palate" (as Valve put it) combined with the different facial possibilities. I've fogottern what the process was called, but basically almost all NPCs faces will be different, correct?
Those two paired could make for some very engaging inhabitants.
Speaking of which - we've only seen male inhabitants of City17...

I think it will make me angry, but only way I'd show emotion if it was really graphic likea hole straight through there head.

Well, I'm not about to grieve them or wear a black armband, but it'll certainly help enrich the game.

I can't wait for this connection to the characters. It will truly be a first time experience, and is a main contributor to Half-Life 2's greatness.

Wow, heh, you could use that phrase for anything.

I can't wait for ________________. It will truly be a first time experience, and is a main contributor to Half-Life 2's greatness.

Who knows, maybe the game will be canceled and we will all go Terminator 2 on Valve HQ.

I could rarely bring myself to even kill the Scis or Barneys in the first game.

It's just a game man, chill out. If you actually start to get emotional when playing HL2 I'd talk to a doctor..

I remember the first time i played HL, i was all sad when a scientist or barney died.(Not like funeral sad, just the sad the makes you overkill the guy that killed him

Does taking things out of context and much too literally qualify speaking to a doctor as well?

Actually we've seen a man comforting a female inhabitant of City17 in the E32004 video :) , in the apartments when the combine come to visit

- Oh and now that I think about it, I think there was a woman at the train station too.
"Were you there only ones on that train?"

And a woman is fighting with you in the Strider battle. Listen closely and you can hear a couple screams from her.

oh, not again, another Mister-I've-got-a-life clone, i'm tired of those...

I've been wanting to start a thread something like this, one about the facial expressions specifically. I guess it's kind of a criticism; although, the graphics are good, but its hard to criticize, really.

I remember seeing the e32003 trailer with the close up of Alxy smiling at the 'camera', and then turning away, and me thinking "wow!!" that was really impressive. And it still is.

I watched the Kliener lab bink video a few times, and I've wondered if Alyx isn't over-expressive-- whoever designed her makes her go through severaly really, really different emotions-- pretty close to the point of making her over-act. But maybe I'm being too critical.

If I was diligent I'd post pics, but I'm not going to; sometting like a play-by play. One second she's rolling her eyes at the doctor to you; the next she's really fawning and whispering to you about her father; the next she's manly action hero woman criticizing Kliener; at the very last second before she turns to the window and then turns back to throw you the MP5 whoever designed alxy has her make a (comparably) long and, um, signifigant I'll say, eye contact with the camera. It's pretty cool, and it's pretty damn clever; but it's close to being too much I think, perhaps; but perhaps it will be effective. Dunno, just wondering if anyone else had the same thought.

Oh, and the lip sync-ing ins't quite in-sync, from what I've seen-- maybe its the video and not the game, though.

Lol I can see it now

Some lonely nerd is standing there admiring Alyx and whipping the sausage when her head gets blown off. Emotionally upset he pulls out the crowbar and procceds to pound the Combine in the head while screaming *YOU KILLED MY VIRTUAL GIRLFRIEND YOU SICK @#$%* and he gets up and starts smashing his bedroom up and then picks up his monitor and throws it across the room and starts crying realising he can't see Alyx no more, at the same time his mom is watching him and looking for the number to dial 911 :P

Also, the "over-expressiveness" that some people have spotted is due to the level of the facial expressions being "turned up" for the recorded videos (Probably so people would notice it more).

I remember reading it somewhere in the VALVe info thread... I think it's Doug Lombardi or Rick Ellis, or one of the others... they even say they were wondering if anyone would notice if they were exaggerated, IIRC.

I'm pretty sure they said the expressions will be a little more toned-down in the final game.

I'd third that, but there, sadly, has been far worse than this on occasion.

And 'Smawg': What's the problem? And how better to solve it than by leaving?
