Half of Germans too fat, statistics office says

Last Updated: 2004-04-27 10:53:29 -0400 (Reuters Health)

BERLIN (Reuters) - Half of Germany's 83 million population is overweight, the Federal Statistics Office said on Tuesday, citing results of a survey of 370,000 people.

Based on their height, age and sex, 49 percent of Germans' body mass index exceeded ideal levels prescribed by the World Health Organization.

Thirteen percent fell within the WHO criteria for very overweight, the Statistics Office said.

"In all age groups, men were more often overweight than women," it said in a statement.

Former male smokers (70 percent) and married men (66 percent) were especially prone to flab. Overall, 58 percent of men were heavier than they should be, up from 56 percent in 1999, the last time the survey was conducted.

The percentage of women judged overweight had hardly changed since 1999, rising slightly to 41 percent from 40 percent, the office said.

Women, especially those between 18 and 19 years old, were more likely than men to be underweight.

hahahahahaaha. oh the irony. :upstare:

I've been beggining to see some buzz start to build over the idea that all these obesity statistics are pretty much bull, and are culled from generalized statistics dealing with the weights of large groups of people. They don't in any great way take into account any factor other than a persons height, sex and weight.
At one point me and several classmates looked ourselves up on an obesity index and found that we were all considered at least borderline obese, despite the fact that none of us are even overweight enough to be called fat.

62% of the american population is overweight. It's a global problem.

Im sure nearly every country has had a enquiry like this and I'd say they all come out nearly the same.(I know Ireland had one or two but cant find links)

[SARCASM]Wouldn't that imply that the other 50% just aren't heavy enough?[/SARCASM]

ahahahahhaha, i just got a mental picture of that german kid uuter from the simpsons saying 'i am from the land of chocolate'

but seriously, yeah, this obesity thing's gotta stop. not that i am, or most of the people i know, but when you walk around on the streets, you see loads of really fat people. more than you should anyway. its just getting worse and worse. im from england btw.

Why dont we move all the fat people to etheopia....Solve two problems.

I honestly don't see how the majority of fat people let themselves get that way....its just silly. Some people have legitemate excuses such as it genuinly being a medical problem but most are just too lazy to do anything about it, they instead just make up some excuse about being 'big boned' :dozey:

Some people are just naturally that way... we're all unique and to think that everyone should fall into a 'right' physical category is ignorant.

I'm not being ignorant...it isn't healthy for most people to be fat. It also doesnt let you live the kind of life you could. There are a number of other problems associated with it as well...take flying on planes for instance. Why souldn't obese people be chared two seats when clearly noone has the room to sit next to them (I know a woman who now has permanent back injury because she. had to go on a long haul flight next to a big person and she was sat in an awkward position all the way).

Edit: I suspect when you say naturally that way, you don't mean majorly over weight. Some people do carry around a little extra than others and yes they are naturally that way but a lot of people are simply unhealthily fat.

There is such a thing as genetic obesity, just rare.
I think. Don't quote me on that.

Hmmm, I think about this issue often.

I am not fat, never have been. Yet I eat absolutely loads. I mean Loads! :P

I really feel sorry for those who have to watch what they eat. And I am scared for the future when it hits me (Hopefully it wont)

Its strange how some people get fat so easy when some people like me dont....

hehe, same with me marksman

I sympathize just a little bit more, since I know that when I don't actively search out something to do I can gain a few pounds. Its not much, but I could imagine it getting out of control for someone with a worse problem.

Yeah there's people that eat big macs breakfast lunch and dinner and don't gain an ounce yet some people eat a biscut and explode.

It's due to metabolism. But also, most people who are overweight get there because they're lazy and eat too damn much food. And bad food at that, too. One thing I can't stand is when people are fat and don't, nor do they admit it's their fault. That's what this whole obese gene crap is about. People don't want to take responsibility to for their problems, so they've found something to pin it on. I bet if a country cloned a f*cking fat man, and kept his clone exercising and eating right, it would be in shape.

BTW: Take into account eating too little. This will cause you to store what little fat you take in. So if you eat little, but it's all bad, you will still gain weight. Or, won't get big, but you lose muscle due to not taking in enough protein. Which either way you'll lose muscle, whether you get big or not.

I am just laughing at this article because all these Europeans call us fat (Amercians) and now we can use it aganist them. :sniper:

You're still fatter, and you sue McDonald's for being so, which is retarded, so na na na na! :P

I can eat everything I want, and I do, yet I'm not overweight, actually rather skinny perhaps, but there's people who don't eat more than they should and what they do eat is pretty healthy and excercise (although I too exercise) and are still overweight. So it's not all attitude and eating habbits but there IS genetics involved too GhostValkyrie.

Not all european countries face being fat. I would say the British, Germans and possibly some of the smaller states like Belgium do. The French are realtively fit and so are the mediterranians. A lot of the eastern countries have populations too poor to get fat.

All so very true. But we live in huge numbers compared to your country. And not half of our population is fat I think.

heh...56.4% of americans are overweight ...19% are obese (30 pounds over the average)....12% are severly obese ...1 in 50 americans are 100 pounds over the average weight.

My friend is 10 pounds overweight and I am 15, I am taller then him but a lot skinnier and he asked me if I even had any fat lol....the system is messed up and doesn't mean anything.

Yeah thats true...but still being over weight is an increasing problem. As i said before, its not just about living longer...I just don't think people can live the life they should. If you are fat then you can't do so many things, and you can also make life harder for those around you.

Im sure il soon be covered in a barrage of fat rights stuff but quite frankly thats irrelevant.

Some of these satistics are irrevlevant I think, but hey what do I know right?

Ha, Fat Rights. I could see it now, they decide to go on a march and have to take constant breaks and carry snacks with them. Fantastic!

Nope. The whole no carbohydrate thing is dumb. You need carbohydrates just to exist (Good ones - fruits, natural foods, etc). You'll lose weight eating few a day, but it'll be more muscle anyway. Well, when you exercise period, you lose more muscle than fat. That's why it's good to lift weights, that way you rebuild the muscle you work off. The same goes for low-calorie diets. Everyone needs a certain amount of caloris, comprised of protein, carbs, and unsaturated fats.
