Just for the sake of discussion,

Is anybody here happy that it isn't released yet--and won't be for a while to come?

This just crossed my mind when I went to look at these screen-shots. One, you see a Zombie putting his arm unnaturally over his face, in the other you see the blood-spurting effect from Half-Life (1).

If they say "it's not done," I guess I've just got to take their word on it! Personally, some of these screens makes me happy that it's not "done."

Discuss!

I'm not really happy that it isn't released. Sure, that'd be bad if they released an unfinished game, but that doesn't really make me grateful that it isn't out.

I'm glad it was delayed.

Simply because they would only delay it if completely necessary.

There's people out there thinking Valve are scumbags for not releasing it on time, but the harsh reality of it is they aren't sitting there right now saying "omg thsi is teh funny making them wait while wer playin a compeet game!!! we r teh le237!$!".

They've delayed it so they can make it the game that we want it to be.

they look to be making tons of improvements while its delayed so not just wasting time. What will turn up is gonna look far better. I'm kinda glad they put it back since the end result will be so much nicer than before, and that was already great quality

I can put my arm like that with no effort, so it's not impossible anatomy-wise. What if I'm a zombie?
Maybe he's using his new B.O. attack?

Unnatural is a good descriptor for a zombie anyways, right?

I'm still glad about the delay, since I'm not getting a new computer 'till july, and the one I have now struggles to run the first HLs.

Anyway, it would be good if Valve could give us some status about game/steam status now..

why dont you e-mail them for a status? it seems like Gabe had no problem answering if it would be released this year so i dont think he'd mind if you ask about the status of it.

Dont like to bother them with my words, just let them work.

I'm glad they delayed. They obviously had a good reason, and I'm sure that they felt it was better to add another 6 months to the development time than release a product they arent happy with. Certainly like many I'm disappointed about the delay, but it will all be for the good I expect. April will be here in no time.

they shouldn't have said it will be released so soon. It just makes us look like unpatient fools. And if we never knew, then we wouln't be so harmed.

Gabe already said the HL1 blood spurts were place holders. The stuff from E3 was already old when they showed it.

I can't say I'm happy about the delay. But I am certain that it can only make the game better.

No one here knows what exactly Valve is doing with the game right now, and no one really knows exactly why they've delayed the game. All we know is that for some reason they came up short in the time span they gave. The reasons vary and no one here can speculate that they are making the game better.

Hey, I know at least one thing they are working on;
Shadows are on our list of items to revisit and improve before shipping. I
can't promise we'll fix this, of course, but it is something for which we
have time alloted.

Yahn

From a long time ago...

I'm sure they'll get it fixed. They've got a lot of time now.

Well I don't think that anyone's really 'glad' about the delay, it's not the right word. But if you have to choose between a game released on time with a lot of glitches and work in progress leading to a lot of disappointment, yeah I'd rather have it coming out later and in perfect shape.
Oh by the way the weird zombie arm would not be a let-down to me in the game, but it's nice that we all have still very high expectations on the game, judging all the critical looks/discussions on screens and movies.

Ah well, we'll just wait and see and in the meantime play other games.

you know how they tend to want to "surprise" people. at least that's what they've said...

Hehehe.

Play other games, are you nuts?! But... But... *sniff*,
Oh, alright...

Huzzah! Well said that man. It's not like they're sitting on finished code and just giggling to themselves that we're all hankering for something that's ripe for release but they just want to torment us. That'd just be silly.
Incidentally, does anyone think that Valve actually have an idea of when it'll be released, besides 2004 (please, God)? This could explain why they've said nothing on the date - they don't want to disappoint us again...

Touching...

I predict that the game will be finishable in less than 10 hours. And I'm being optimistic here.

Half-Life could be finished within 10 hours when you rush through it, but normal playing style it's 25+ hours and HL2 would be about the same length said Valve (and we have no reason now to doubt that, it' some kind of hype to doubt everything they ever said :/ )

they are?
I thought Gabe was quoted as saying (in the valve email thread) they are not adding any content, as the game simply was not done to begin with...
what lead you to the conclusion they are adding stuff?
the old screenshots from the magazine? (well the 3 recently re-shown) dont get me wrong, Im hoping they add stuff, I really hope they touch up the gfx some (I really think they should redo those damn zombies) and I know its going to be a brilliant game regardless.
I just havent heard anywhere they are adding content (actually the contrary)
and the "new" shots look exactly as they did before (I dont see a difference in lighting/models/explosions/etc)... I dont wanna compare it the the "B word" but they look the same as in the shots I saw then. :/
wishful thinking, but at this point Im just dying to get my hands on the engine to mod :D

I think what makes me not happy about the delay is the misinformation and subsequent iron curtain. I had no problem when the first one was delayed, but they did not go as far as to tell us that the game was "almost done" the way they did with HL2.

This said, I'm buying it when it comes out.

However you play it, there's no way you can get a difference of 10 hrs to 25.

Nevertheless, I think 10 hours is way off - HL was a far longer game than that. For Christ's sake, Max Payne wasn't much shorter than that. I think. So exactly what led you to conclude you could complete HL2 in 10 hours of gameplay?

in most cases im glad its delayed, that gives them more time to polish and refine the game, and it also gives me alot more time to buy my new comp and a much cheaper price. what i dont care for though is there silence, they havnt come out to say anything new about the game, havnt given us an update as to whats going on, or any new vids/screens. they really need to do something to break the silence.

Im pissed its not released wtf :sniper: :flame:

Im not mad, I have no stance on it actually,
but just imagine we "shoulda" had 78 days of HL2 under our belt by now ;)

I don't see how those 3 'new' screenshots could be up-to-date unless they were running on <dx8 video card. Gabe has said that they added more effects and finalized them after e3 (HDR is one of those effects). The beta is pre-e3. I also expect higher quality art (textures, models) than what we've seen in the vids (except the HDR- that's fine by me).

Well, it's more like 1 new screenshot. One is concept art and another is from the Strider part at E3.

Man, I'm just sick of all the lies producers give us: They said Max Payne 2 would be as twice as long as the original. It was a lot shorter. Now who's head should I break for that ? Probably mine.
In the case of Jedi Academy, we were told that it's gonna be three times longer than Jedi Outcast. Again, the game was shorter ! If producers are such BASTARDS(this is the nicest way I can put it), why the hell should I keep on believing the crap they shove us ??? I mean for how long ?
HL2 it's probably going to be a dense, good-looking game, and we all know that such games are always short. So, I'm being pessimistic. :dozey:

it's to the point now where i don't even want HL2 to come out soon. I just want some new info, some new shots, and maybe a release date. that would make me oh so happy.

You know, I just want them to say: "The game is 80% complete, and we're working our butts off to finish it as soon as possible. Here's a few new vids..."

Haven't reached that point yet, but I'm close *sigh*

Very true. But there's just something in the nature of HL that I don't think the sequel will be shorter than HL1, as it was a pretty good length in itself. Think about this: There are still LOTS of locations we haven't seen properly. We know there's a lot in and around the streets of City17; there's a fair bit in the dilapidated prison; the dock area; there's the HUGE dried up lake/buggy section; and then there's the levels in the Citadel and Xen that, besides seeing some artwork/knowing of their inclusion, we haven't even seen yet. Plus, given the secrecy shrouded around much of the game (weapons, enemies, characters etc.) I'm sure there's lots of environments Valve hasn't even hinted at yet... This game will have to try hard to be short. No way 10 hours.

Isn't there also supposed to be some level in the arctic or something, a large ship anyway, I swear I've seen a concept pic or something from that before

Oh yeah! The ship - I forgot about that! Didn't hear about the Arctic, but that certainly sounds VERY promising... Arctic games/levels are often VERY atmospheric.

They could lenghten the game by making us run around the same level for a while, you know back and forth, on and on... And I wouldn't mind that as long as there's a good storyline behind it.
