HDR with Skybox possible for DM?

I've been messing around with sdk_example_hdr.vmf from SDK Nuts and I can only run it in CSS. Does anyone know where to get/how to use HDR skyboxes for Deathmatch?
 
I thought it was enabled for hl2dm now... maybe I'm wrong... if it's not enabled, it's not going to be easy.... or maybe even not possible
 
I don't think HDR is enabled in HL2DM since that is basically HL2 and HL2 dont have HDR.

Yeah, I downloaded a DM map yesterday called Residential that used HDR. I just haven't seen any tutorials or sample .vmf's to look at to see how it's done.

By the way, does anyone know how to include a file from a different .gcf package than your hammer configuration? For example, I want to use the militia_hdr skybox (which is from counter-strike source shared.gcf) in a DM map (where hammer only has source materials.gcf to work with).
 
you cant really do that without it being incompatible



if you want to do it for your own purposes you can edit the GCF's in the gameinfo file


but then it wont work on anyone elses computer... sorry many overall you cant really do that without starting your own mod
 
Yeah you can....

Short explanation. Grab GCFScape and extract the stuff that you want. Add that as custom stuff in the mod you want to switch it to.

Voila! You know have cross-mod stuff.

The only backdraw to this is that it is illegal and VALVe will be angry bacuase you will have to distribute those CSS files with your HL2DM map. ANd that means that ppl who have HL2DM but not CSS will get CSS content and that means that you have broken a copyright law or two.

Wohoo! Very much do-able but also against the law. What to do, what to do?
 
That sucks... maybe I won't use anything from CSS then. It sounds like the only way to do this is to make my own hdr skybox (or find a user created one) and create a mod.
 
hdr isnt meant just for a certain game. its in the game engine hdr will work in hl2dm its just sourcesdk isnt built to use it.

Why build a mod? If I got things right then HL2DM supports HDR so all you need to do is find a custom HDR skybox which you are allowed to distribute and map with that.

No need to make an entire mod jus for that eh?

Oh yeah, good point. Now to find an hdr skybox...
 
You can make them easily.

Do a google search for some high-res sky textures then split them up into 6 images and convert them to .vmt and .vtf then compile them as a skybox.

Not sure how you compile them into a skybox though.
