Help a geriatric??

I am new to gaming, and have a problem in HL2 after about the third map load, where you are told to run for the roof, passing through an upstairs apartment, where there is a woman and a couple of blokes. I have tried everything I can think of in that apartment, but always end up being caught up with and bludgeoned to death! What am I missing, please? Also, what is the definition of a spoiler?

a spoiler is a tidbit of information that could possible spoil the fun and surprise of certain key moments in a game. The section that you're talking about is a little bit confusing if you aren't used to these types of games. After you leave the hallway where the cops kicked down the door, go upstairs and you will hear a guy calling you. Go into his room and then make a mad dash through the door on the left side of the room. At this point, the cops are hot on your trail. If I remember correctly, a man will hurry you through a door and then you go up some stairs to a wooden enclosed roof type of place. Jump to the next roof (it's either in front of you or to your left). Keep moving and make your way across all of the roofs. There is only one way to go. When you come to two windows, jump through one of them, and go down the set of stairs in the room. you will come out into a hallway and the cops will break down the doors and surround you. Don't panic, just run back towards the stairs and wait because Alyx will rescue you.
