HELP! cant get HL2 deathmatch working on lan

Im having issues!
I have managed to set up deathmatch on lan before, i believe by opening the console and typing connect x.x.x.x:27016
(x=ip address)
but now i cant seem to get it work again it just keeps failing.
any ideas as to why this would happen?

Its going through my lynksys wag54g gateway as it was before hand. I cant think what would have changed to stop it working.

I also want to do the same in garys mod 8. I dont know if its any different??

The connect command only connects you to a server AFAIK. Try using map mapname instead. This will starta a server and connect you to it.

Tried that and yes it starts up a game but im not finding it from my other computer on the network.
I have my sv_lan set to 0 which i believe is also right.
I did manage to do it the way i previously mentioned before, I'm wondering if its something to do with my adsl gateway.
I dunno...

if you're trying to play on a lan, it should be sv_lan 1

Oh right cheers. That still didnt work though. However i just found out my firewall was blocking it, d'oh.
so it is sorted at last woooo.

It sounds like a network issue to me, not HL2DM related. Do you find shared folders on the network from both computers? Or servers from other games with those computers?

Actually thats something else im having trouble with, I cant access the shared folders on over the network. Zone alarm was the reason HL2 wasnt working so maybe thats sorted now, ill give it a go.
