I'm trying to, but can't for the life of me remember the name of this scary book. It might even be two scary books. I want to get the book if possible as a nostalgic trip into my childhood... to read this halloween.

Spoilers are below, so if you'd rather just wait for the answer to the name of the book, don't read the rest of my post.

A few of the scenes i'm reminded of, are this girl who wears a scarf... eventually when it is removed her head falls off.

Another short story in it is this girl who gets bit by a spider, and the red spot where she was bitten grows larger and larger, eventually it bursts and hundreds of tiny spiders crawl out onto her face and all over.

Then another of the stories(might be part of a different book), is these two guys who break into this house or whatever, and have flashlights... and they encounter this ghost dog of sorts, sort of dead and torn up.

Then the last story I remember, and the one that scared me the most as a child reading it, was the story of "Harold", if that is how it is spelled. He would rock up and down on the roof of this house, and hold up a human skin to dry. The exact details elude me...

Please help! I want to read this book during my halloween.

EDIT: Are these them? Did I find them?

I think I only found one series of the books... and the other one is something completely different.

Reminds me of Goosebumps somehow.....

Anyone used to read that as a kid?

I used to love Goosebumps. I read nearly every one. But I grew out of it.

I especially liked those ones where you chose your own path to take. Those were new and interesting for me.

Goosebumps isn't the answer i'm looking for though.

They're from "Scary Stories That Will Fvck Your Child Up in the Head for Years to Come."

You have no idea how much I think about this story. I attribute it to being one of the main causes of my arachnophobia. It's even worse because in the book, this (along with a few others) is billed under stories that MAY be true, but are unconfirmed.

Those used to annoy the hell out of me, because every single time, no matter how hard I tried, I'd always get killed.

So those are the books with harold? And with the girl that has the scarf?

What about the ghost dog(s)? The ghost dog stories freaked me out to no end.

I'm not sure about the ghost dog one, but it sounds like something that'd be in the book. The Harold story is in "Scary Stories 3," and I believe that the girl with the spider was in "More Scary Stories," but I can't be sure. It's been a long while since reading them for me too, I just remember that story with vivid clarity.

I think that was the point of these books: to show that you can't escape life alive. :p

Yes, those are the books. Other stories I remember from them are the poltergeist one, and the woman who thoguht a rabid rat was a chiuaua.

Shens wrote a fantastic short goosebumps story which typified how bad they were, it was spot on, maybe he'll post it.

wooow, i remember those books. The stories weren';t that scary, but WTF IS WITH THOSE PICTURES?!?!??! HOLY CRAP somebody was on acid when he was drawing those lol seriously...

yeah, for reals :/

At first they were just like sombody had sprayed ink all over the page, but then you look closer and then it's totally what the hell...

My favorite Goosebumps episode of the show was the killer sponge, I always laughed because it seemed as if they just ran out of ideas, and then at the end there was a killer potato. lol.

Those "Scary Stories" books are awesome, I remember reading them as a kid. The illustrations are great too. I remember one about this guy hearing a noise as he sat by his fireplace and all of a sudden a head fell down the fireplace and out in front of him. Another where this woman burned herself and put her finger in her mouth as an instinctive reaction to being burned, but like the taste. She wound up burning her entire body and eating all her skin off. Good stuff.

I used to read those books all the time, my favourite was the one whith the farmer, who find the grim reaper who tell's him he's going to go visit his son the next day. I forget what happens next, but I remember it being really cool. The illustration were nice too.

They're from "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark"

I have all three volumes on my bookshelf :D

Speaking of scary books, has anybody here read House of Leaves? From what I've heard, it's the most mindf*ckingly terrifying piece of literature even created. Needless to say, I'm deadset on reading it :D

OMG i have those books, and the story of the red spot is called..."the red spot" i think. God those pictures are freaky and awesome at the same time. I used to read them as a kid, and it would explain a lot....
