HELP!!!! playing offline

I bought hl2 through steam, unlocked the files and played already, but no matter what i do i cannot figure out how is it that you play the game onffline, i tried running the executable file in the valve folder and didnt work, the only way i can play is if i am connected to steam, DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW TO RUN THE GAME OFFLINE without being connected to steam,

Unplug yourself from the internet and start Steam. It will ask if you want to play in Offline mode.

well, thanks for the response, but steam will not start if there is not an internet connection, i tried unplugging the internet cable while connected to steam and it didnt work either, , when i click on half life 2 properties under steam, it says that offline mode is available but how do you turn it on, STEAM IS SUCH A BIG PIECE OF S**T and took me almost half and hour to log on the last time, I dont wanna go through this everytime i want to play, PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is anybody else going through the same

i thought i read that you have to log on and click "remember password" and when you log off it stores everything so you can play offline without logging on.....although i dont know how true this is since im still currently installing the game =/

I too have tried every option to play offline and am typing this with gritted teeth and wanting badly to smack somebody.

I unchecked 'Disable details to be stored on computer'.
I restarted my PC and then Steam without a net connection and got the 'retry web connection / play offline' option.
I selected 'play offline'.
Tried to start HL2 and this error pops up every time:

'This game isn't ready to play offline.'

I'm beginning to think it isn't possible at all to play offline despite valve claiming the contrary.

i had the same problem, but i remember that when i first logged onto steam(i have the retail) and entered cd-key, it said we're to busy to verify, but you can play for now..
then i read on the steampowered site, that until that key is in fact verified, you can't play offline..
if i disconnect, i can get to the offline option, but then it says HL2 not yet enabled for offline play.. so i think it's just we're waiting for the official key verification..

do you have the retail? if you downloaded it from steam, i bet your cd-key is already verified.. i have the retail and it won't work..

iv got retail dvd version i got it from the game shop in town @ about 10:00 this morning .... been playing it all day in offline mode

wheres the option for offline mode ..shouldnt even need steam once the games been verified..altho atm HL:S is still loading cant play HL2 MORE THAN 20-40 mins without it locking up the system.

It wont let me play offline either. Tells me this game isnt ready to play offline. Half life 1 and opposing force work offline, but not half life 2. Im using the steam downloaded version.
