Help understanding the Voice Chat of HL2:DM

I have just recently started playing computer games...have been an Xbox/360/PS gamer for sever years but never computer gamer...... I have currently just installed HL2: DM and i cant seem to get the voice chat to work. I have used steam support to attempt to fix the problem but have had no success. If anyone has any suggestions to attempt to get this working, please advise, or if maybe i am missing something that i normally wouldn't look for, I'll take any advice please. Thank you.

Voice Chat ingame? Hold the key (can set it in options) and talk.

HL2DM chatsystem got mangled in a recent steam update as far as I know.
