Help with graphics/config issues

Right, whenever I try to edit my graphics setting in hl2 (which i need to do, bcos its being laggy as hell), the game crashes majorly.

I was wondering if its possible to define graphics options in the config.cfg file, (which im sure it is), and if anyone knew which lines to edit, and to what values.

I have exactly the same problem when trying to change the graphics settings on my laptop (Intel Extreme 2 graphics). It runs fine on the default settings, but if I try to change any video.detail or audio configs, it crashes.

I'd appreciate any help on this topic as well, please.
