here are my questions

1- how does it work??
2- what does it do to "help you"... is it just body armor??
3- why does it need to be re-charged, and what is it recharged with??

1) You put it on, you put the helmet on, you see a HUD that displays the armour, health, and ammo in a mysterious way.
2) Hazardous Environment Suit. What'dya think it does?
3) It's to charge up the armour, and it's charged up with regular electricity. But, as Combine Electricity is more frequently found, Dr Kleiner modified it so it could use their energy source as well.

I'd say either
it's nanotech or
it creates some kind of protective field around the user.

yea thats what i was thinking too

im thinking more along the lines of a cross between a Haz-Mat suit and a Space Suit, remember, it was made not only for use by the people going into the test chamber, but also for the ones being teleported into Xen to take the mineral samples, so it had to have been made to also work as armor just incase any Aliens show up.

If the HEV suit were to actually exist, I think the HUD projections wouldnt be there, and the user would have to rely on the voice ques moreso (mostly because with the info in HL2 given you can assume gordon isnt wearing his helmet, and yet the health/armor data still shows up for gameplay's sake.)

The HEV doesn't use forcefields; the armour is reactive.
When a bullet hits the armour, it stiffens at the impact spot (depending on the situation) and absorbs the bullet's force. That process requires electricity though.
The suit also uses the electricity to repair itself after taking damage somehow. Maybe that's nanotech, but who knows.

The suit is loaded with various sensors that monitor the environment around you, as well as your health and inventory.
The inventory system has the ability to count and identify whatever guns or ammo you pick up, from a programable database of different weapons.
The health system detects injuries and can determine where the damage came from how critical it is. Internal mechanisms can inject some minor treatments like morphine and other drugs kept in supply. The suit can probably also tighten around wounds to prevent bleeding, and splint broken bones.
The environment sensors are pretty rudimentary, mostly just a gieger counter, but they also relay signals that tell your position and other information to superior officers (probably so that you could be located if buried under rubble or something.)

The suit has a communications system that picks up nearby radio signals and can be modified to recieve direct transmissions.
The joints are motorized, giving the wearer slightly better strength and great stamina (with brief boosts of speed).
The suit also collects and stores a small supply of oxygen, and recirculates it electrically.
There is also a flashlight built into the right arm.

The helmet (yes there is one :P) contains a HUD screen which displays this information, headphones and cameras hooked into the HUD that give the user binocular zoom vision.

Actually the suit works around integer variables and calls / refferences to and by other peices of source code.

whats with all these threads about the HEV suit all of a sudden?

YESS!!!! i cant wait.

It uses magic...:E

Yes even though it's simply a game's device for simplicity I actually have a theory.

The suit's outer material is made out of biosteel which absorbs impact. It has electrodes that monitor your health status and a needle that administers morphine and Xen healing liquid. Inside are trillions of nanobots incased with foam, that are smart and designed to form a "net". But once moved it needs a special electrical charge to get it back in shape and be protective again. H.E.V and Combine power outlets contain that as well as new nanobots to replace missing and damaged parts.

The orange and grey plates are made of boron.

The flashlight is built on the helmet, it dosn't move when you reload etc only when you look around. And don't forget it has tracking devices aswell(although Dr. Kleiner may have taken them out so they couldn't be tracked by the Combine.

Well what do ya know, that all pretty much fits and is somewhat realistic. Well done.

I always thought the flashlight was on the chest...
But if he was crawling through a vent it would face down then, not forward.

He's very flexible.

hahaha, i think by the way he holds the guns that he just squats and walks like that... but if it was on his cheast then the gun + his arms would get in the way

That's pretty much exactly the way I see it.

Just for the record, most of the stuffs I listed are confirmed in the various games.

And yep Sulk, the flashlight is in the right arm, at least in HL2.
I think HL1's was in the torso or helmet, but it may have come from the arm as well.
This actually causes a bit of a glitch. Turn on your flashlight in deathmatch and attack someone with your crowbar - the light will shine up towards the ceiling whenever you raise your arm.
