Having reread The Golden Compass like 10 times over the last few years, I finally got off my ass and began reading the rest of the series. I am currently like half way through The Amber Spyglass, and loving it so far.

What do people think of the series?

What was your opinion of the movie?

Who actually gives a **** about the whole atheism thing?

1) Its an awesome book, seriously well written, interesting, all that.

2) I haven't seen the movie, but I think it is going to be rubbish. However, it is New Line Cinema, so maybe it will be good.

3) I certainly don't care about the whole atheism thing. That was just fox news bieng alarmist idiots. Nothing new there.

Excellent series.
Movie felt rushed, and lack of the proper ending ftl. My sister also thinks the bear-jaw bit was extremely cynical ratings-wise.

The atheism thing isn't a big deal for most people. Hell, my uncle was in the seminary for a year training to be a priest before he decided it wasn't for him, and he is now a eucharistic minister - he loved the books. Several other fairly devout friends and family (including catholics) enjoyed them and didn't think the atheism thing was a big deal.

Got all three for Christmas. Looking forward to getting into them soon.

Wonderful and amazing trilogy; re-read them this summer. Haven't seen the film and don't intend to.

The film is probably better if you've read the books than if you watch it without reading them. It's rushed because it tries to fit it all in in too little time, but if you're already familiar with the story it's better.

Worth a watch if you're not busy and your expectations aren't too high.

I disagree. I would think the movie is more enjoyable if you HAVEN'T read the books.

Books are crap. Writing style was contrived and self-indulgent.
Film made no sense. Possibly due to the contrived and self-indulgent writing of the novels.

Controversy over. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.
