As you may know, once in a while a freshly slaughtered combine soldier drops a grenade-like canister that Gordon can use to restore some health. What do you think Gordon does with it? Does he drink it like a can of coke? Spray the green goo inside the canister all over his wounds?) Or is there an attachment for that sort of thing in the HEV? What about poor combine soldiers? Do they gulp it down through their facemasks?

Anyways, it would be cool to know what the concept behind it was.

It's health. In a game. It doesn't do anything. It gives you health. In the game.

I'm asking because I was thinking of making an animation of a player using the said canister. That is, it would be in his inventory, he'd select it, and his model would be seen holding the canister in the hand, but what would be the actual animation when a player uses it to restore health?

...

Morphine? Some sort of coagulant gel that goes into his suit and is administered over bleeding wounds? Or possibly something that stiffens when in contact with air to keep broken bones in place.

I just realised. It's Phlebotinum. He applies it. Don't ask where.

In terms of ideas for what Gordon or anyone else might do with the gel pack-looking item, I have no idea. I assume it's the same way that he applies the larger health packs, as I believe that's where the smaller "canisters" come from. Or at least, last time I checked. It probably ties in with his suit, somehow.

I say make the Lambda faceplate on the HEV's breast a little press in flap where underneath you find a power connector and a health receptacle that drains the liquid. He could slam the health grenade into the receptacle (end first), he then twist it in to let it drain and then he throws it away dramatically :P How it administers it once it's inside the suit is another matter (probably like how it administers morphine, locally, within the suit), but you don't have to explain that. In general it's best not to solve the mysteries of the suit, since it won't hold up to reality :P

On the HEV, this function was probably on the faceplate below the Lambda sign. You can see a connector looking thing on the upper left with a bunch of useless buttons below.

He does it like he does it with the Health kits and the Energy kits on the walls
He plugs in a cord from his HEV and it charges him right up

"Unknown device attached. Orifice selected. Inserting contents."
"Wait, what?"

Edit: I fail at quoting. Fixed.

I'm sorry, but your HEV suit is incompatible with this version of PenOS. Please contact your authorised HEV dealer to purchase an adapter.

On a similar note, i'd just like to discuss sometihng quickly. Ever noticed how, without the HEV suit, Gordon has NO health. So that means there is no difference between 'Health' and 'Suit' power, both are powered purely by the suit.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before.

Ah, yes. Curious to know that the "upgraded" HEV suit lacks all those nifty buttons below the lambda sign. I wonder if perhaps some of those were the tracking systems...

Or maybe there is just a panel that props open or something. Another curious thing - if you look closely then you can see that gordon can't go pee pee in the new hev suit. Talk about incentive to finish a job faster...

Those are some good ideas, thanks. I'm starting to think that it should be something injected into bloodstream.

They medpack and "healthvial" both contain the green goo canister, but the medpack heals more. Either it has more of the stuff... Or the stuff is more efficient.

Now that I remember, I think the power station in HL1 had a thick cord on it. Well, flat 2d cord drawn on it, anyways. Which does indeed imply that Gordon has an orifice on him somewhere. I mean, his suit does.

Oh, he has health alright, it's just not displayed since it's the hev suit that gives him his hud. You can even use weapons and stuff, but again you won't know how much ammo you have left.

who cares?
I do, I started the thread. I'm starting to think that this "I don't care and I have posted here to let everyone know that I don't care" issue needs to addressed. So, I'd just like to say this to anyone who does not care about this thread or it's subject - there's really no reason or need to post in it if you don't care.

My theory on the health in both HL and HL2 has been that the machines, or the packs are simply filled with the same water from Xen that heals you when standing in it. That's what makes the most sense to me anyways.

I like to think it's blood, or some artificial supplement for it, although it doesn't make much sense

Hey! Why haven't I thought of that? That's a pretty good idea. :)

Actually, why not? When a person is shot most of the damage is due to the immediate blood loss, that is people die from loosing too much blood. So, blood infusions would replace the lost blood and thus "restore" health. The stuff is green though, so it's probably a replacement.

Curses Nibwoddle! Now I'll have to read the whole Concerned comic again! lol

I'm thinking the green stuff is artificial blood mixed with painkiller and some highly potent cell regenerating chemical...

Except his health isn't a fixed number without his suit. So he can be shot as much as he likes as long as he recovers, much like in most shooters these days.

Edit: Didn't see the second page, that was aimed at hl_grunt.

I don't really see what you mean. Do you mean that he regenerates automatically?

The way I understand it, his health is the same number with our without suit, it's just that the user does not know much he has left...

No way. A HEV suit vs ordinary clothes, I know what I'd be wearing in a firefight.

The goo is probably to be applied to wounds. I imagine Gordon puts it into the HEV suit and it administers it automatically.

Blackthorn is referring to the way that if you don't have the HEV suit in game, Gordon actually regenerates after having not taken damage for a while, like other FPS games and even Portal. Of course, this is just for gameplay reasons and doesn't imply he actually has some kind of super regeneration ability.

So that you won't get shot a few times while running away in Point Insertion and be on 1 health. Then a minute later get shot once and drop dead.

I *remember* now. You do get shot a few times in the beginning but manage to be in perfect good health once you're all suited up. About portal, if I remember correctly then you continue to regenerate even when you spawn yourself a suit with cheats.

Ummmm are you all retarded? He runs over it and feels better. Steps on the canister and it is absorbed into him.

That's all great and all, and I am aware that this is how the game is set up right now, but I'm looking for something slightly better than a player running over a medkit and absorbing it like an amoeba. And right now I'm thinking of the sort of animations that could be done...

medpackvsnadegr3.jpg

This is the sort of image I was looking for. I would imagine the larger medkit has banages or supplementary healing items in it. So whatever animation you have for the medkit could apply to the smaller cannisters.

While I don't know what the user might do with them, one suggestion for an animation is have the user smash it, like a bottle or other glass object. It would look kinda cool, even if it doesn't make total sense. The "liquid" in the canister could evaporate as if it were compressed, and is then absorbed into the skin.

I'd like to believe that the health-pack liquid in HL2 is a form of morphine the Combine mutated for the best perfomance in their soldiers, whils tthe HEV suit pack is merely a form of electricity that stops the suit from losing power and essentially just becoming clothing. However, I think that the health in HL1 is a much more mundane 'all-around first AID kit', with bandages, morphine and other health supplements.

I don't think the suit ever becomes just a "lab coat" or "clothing". It appears to be much more robust than that, and I believe provides protection against things like radiation, even while low on energy. You can run through a pool of radioactive liquid in either game and only lose marginal amounts of health. Any scientist or citizen would die. However, the energy that the suit uses can be used to enhance its protection. Much like a forcefield.
