I've only recently jumped onto the HL crave and now I am addicted. I always thought it was some stupid Counter-Strike story and a boring game. Boy was I wrong, I started with playing HL2 and to me, the story is like the War of the Worlds movie (Striders, etc.) + Halo (Headcrabs/Zombies & flood, 343 guilty spark & scanners, etc.) but much better! The story is absolutely amazing so I've recently purchased the remaining 2 episodes. EP2s graphics for the first 10 minutes I played it are breath-taking. I couldn't care for the graphics of Crysis as much as I like the feeling that EP2 has.

Being this addicted, I went backwards as well, to get the full story. I found a pack on eBay that sells the original HL with Blue Shift and Opposing force, all which look boring graphic wise.

What do you guys think? Should I play them for the story?

Thanks, & pardon me if I made any mistakes in terms for forum rules.

All three are amazing games and really fun, so I think you should get them. You won't regret it, I never did and I got them all for like $70, but that included CS 1.6 and Tem Fortress Classic. But yes, I urge you to get them, they're amazingly good

Worth every penny. You can also buy them at Steam.

Okay, I will definitely give them a shot then. If there's any other HL related games I should play thats out which I am not informed about, do let me know.

Valve is my new favorite game developing company, and I feel buying their games gives me more satisfaction than paying tuition for a Bachelors degree :). Oh boy my priorities aren't in order.

There are alot of Mods you can check out, they're not part of the HL story. But they are still fun nontheless

Both worth getting. Just wonderful to experience the whole Black Mesa incident through an other point of view.

Get the Half-Life: Decay mod and Half-Life: Uplink if you want the whole story.

Uplink was the demo release for Half-Life which consisted of levels that didn't make the final cut.

It's pretty fun.

I remember my older brothers playing it wayyy back around the time HL released. When I saw those scientists reacting to the player, looking at you, talking to you, it was ****ing surreal. I couldn't believe how real it felt.

How long is the game play? And are there any new things, or is it just primarily cut levels?

New things, I don't think so.

I can't quite remember but I'd say somewhere around 45 minutes?

It is the PC demo. You can still find the non-Steam version around but as well you can find a few mods of it including an extended version.

*Veg beat me to the punch*

There's PS2 version of Uplink included on some demo disc, but it's very rare.

Oh, okay. I see now. I thought it was on the PS1 like how Decay was, but then I remembered Decayse was for PS because it was two players

Are you saying this is all the Half life 2 story is? lmao...

The Half life anthology which has all three half life 1 games, is only like 10-15 bucks, so even if the expansions sucked, which they don't, itd still be worth it seeing how its hardly any money...

Wow, uplink was a great demo. I hate the way that you lean when you walk.

No I meant I saw similar elements. Pretty freaking cool though, War of the Worlds is one of my favorite movies and I only wish there was a game like that, which HL2 came close to.

I'm playing beginning of HL1 right now, and holy hell it's scarier than HL2! Headcrabs jump out of anywhere, controls suck, AI friends sucks more, everything is like Doom lol. Is it just me, or does the M16-type gun barely hit? I aim directly into the soldiers head 1 foot in front of him without moving and it takes forever to kill him.

Well if anything, Halo is like Half life, not the other way around. half life came before halo... But eitther way i dont see any huge similarities between the two...

And i wouldnt say half life 1 is like doom in every aspect. It seems everything half life is based on other games and movies to you....

Well, since I did HL after everything, I was comparing it to them. Didn't realize HL came out before all of that stuff. I like HL2 more than Halo now, I was set on Halo being the best FPS/story but I guess not. And EP2 graphics are amazing :O

I got it for 8 $, and that included Ricochet, Deathmatch Classic, and Day of Defeat in addition to the rest. But I was very lucky I think.

That is the Half Life 1 Anthology correct. I found the same in a Zeller's bargain bin for $7. Great deal.

Go for it i bought the HL1 anthology i cant remember how much but it was less than a tenner anyway and they are great games.

Well maybe not Ricochet so much. It could be because I get utterly owned any time I have ever loaded it up.

Definitely, get Half-Life 1 at least, that game is revolutionary!

What I've played of Blue Shift is alright (It stopped working right near the start) & I'm going to try Opposing Force soon (I bought it the other day, It just finished downloading).

If its better value: get it, but its a matter of opinion really

Watch this, its gameplay footage as well as humorous dialogue:

PS. Try Portal as well, it's part of the Half-Life saga & is a must-play for anyone who claims to be a HL fan.

Happy Gaming :)

What is the differences between half life 1 and blue shift?? Also Half life: Decay is a expansion pack or a mod??

Blue Shift is an expansion pack for Half-Life, though it was stand-alone due to some engine modifications.
Decay is a PS2 expansion pack, but it has been recreated for PC as a mod.
