hl2 retail, will it require steam registration befor play?

...I think I read today that the game needs to be "activated" online (on steam) to be played in offline mode anyway, so even that user in the country WITHOUT internet is going to need to connect somehow, I believe.

I read somewhere (a post here) that befor u can play hl2(talking retails here) offline you will need to register/login to steam to enable offline play.

So anyone without a net connection will not be able to play. I find this hard to except.

I've not seen any official info about this. Can anyone comment?

It's an acceptable stance to take as long as they clearly mark the box "Internet Connection REQUIRED"; although admittedly anyone in college/abroad/whatever will be screwed. But even us 56kers can cope with a one-time register, so finally I can feel superior to someone
