HL2 to ship with CS:S

Highlights from an Interview with Doug and Cliff:

Is Counter-Strike Source actually Counter-Strike 2, or is there still a further iteration of the game that you're working on based on the Source technology?

Lombardi: During the development of the Source engine technology, we wanted to make sure we didn't make the path from Half-Life 1-based MODs to Source exceedingly difficult for those who wanted to bring their games forward. To test this, we had a few people take on the task of bringing Half-Life 1 single-player forward to Source. The process proved to be fairly manageable, and we obviously identified a few things we could do to help make this even more so for others who tried it.

Once the experiment was run, we decided to run the test on one of our multiplayer games, and CS was the natural choice. However, unlike the HL1 Source project, the CS: Source work extended to the creation of new player and weapon models, new world models, new sounds, and more.

So that's a quick take on the evolution of CS: Source, which is not CS2.

Have you finalised how CS Source will be distributed?

Lombardi: It will be included with all versions of Half-Life 2, and made available as a stand alone purchase.

Are driveable vehicles going to feature in Counter-Strike Source?

Lombardi: At launch, CS: Source will only contain the weapons and items currently available in CS.

Finally, can you tell us any more about your plans to give the entire Half-Life range - e.g. HL 1, TFC, HLDMC, Ricochet, Opposing Force etc - a Source makeover?

Lombardi: HL1 Source and CS: Source will be made available at the same time as HL2. Most of the others you mention and more (DoD) [Day of Defeat], will come a bit later. Please stay tuned for more.

Yes, so we now know CS and HL Source will be available to all HL2 owners. Kick ass.

When was this interview done?
Today, 08/13/2004, at 17:35, London time i'm guessing (the site is British). So thats 12:35 EST.

The one thing that Doug failed to clarify is if HL:S will ship with HL2. It's implied, but not definite.

Is HL:S have it's own CD-key. Otherwise I'll just get it from my friend that it actually buying the collectors edition.

"Made avaliable" does not mean "ship with".

I think "included" means ship with, tho.

He confirms CS:S will be included with HL2 and as a stand-alone purchase. Then he says the following:

"Lombardi: HL1 Source and CS: Source will be made available at the same time as HL2."

If CS:S will be available, and he confirms it will be included with HL2, then he says the above message, does that not officially state that HL:S and CS:S will be included with HL2? You can't always think the devs are playing mind game with us.

EDIT: I'm going to go ahead and assume that Valve will do the same thing they did with HL1. You buy the original game, and then you can download, free of charge, all mods. So, in this case, we will be able to download CS:S and HL:S through Steam. Just an assumption, but it makes sense.

It can always mean that HL:S will be awailable with the collectors edition. Valve should really come out and say what's up with the CE.

I really really really doubt that HL:S and CS:S will be only packaged with the CE. Valve wouldn't make such a stupid marketing mistake. They probably know many people would want it, so they wouldn't hold back until so close to the release to tell us that both those games will only be available in the CE when thousands have already pre-ordered HL2 in its non-CE form.

Hear hear, but then WHAT THE **** is in the CE. I mean, they gotta put something better in there than a T-Shirt. Maybe a Gordon Freeman mask so you can be him for halloween.

So we do get HL:S with HL2?! Alright!

EDIT: 100th post! W00t!

when they said that cs:source will be bundled with every version of hl, do they also mean the budget SINGLE PLAYER ONLY version also???

that confused me

He said that CS:S will be stand alone and also available to those with HL2

He didn't mention that HL1:S would be distributed with HL2 though

I have a sneak suspicion that the HL1 Saga (HL1, Opposing force, Blue shift) will ship altogether at a later date as a box set, similar to the Generations package available now

It is clear that this issue has not been settled. Why won't Valve tell us what is going to be included with the different versions? The time is near ;) so you would think they would know by now...

It seems like a lot of people (including me) are not preordering the CE becuse of the lack of info.

Knowing Valve, TFC source won't come out until a year after the game is on shelves.

Don't forget the general lack of money as well.

No, it's possible they put some combo of Source-updated old content in the CE and not the standard but then make them available over Steam for a small upgrade price for people who bought the standard. Having a collector's edition released anytime after the regular version makes no sense because its the same hardcore audience that rushes out to buy it. Releasing it later just pisses off those people. Sure, they can get away with it with DVD's when you're talking about items less than 20 bucks, but making people pay ~50 bucks for something they already own is asking for trouble. A video game company relies upon a more dedicated following than a movie studio (there aren't fanboys attached to any particular one).

that confuses me too, wouldnt it be pointless to include CS:S in single player version? Although CZ does have bots, so maybe CS:S does too. Also, the single player version isnt confirmed yet, so maybe single player version isnt going to produced.

I hope HL2 will include HL:S, that would be fun. I wonder what the Xen work looks like redone :P

The same, but with better shadows and maybe some shaders. They're supposedly not doing much of an update to the HL textures and models for HL:S.

And this isn't this first time they've said that CS:S will be included with the SP edition...
