Now this is just random speculation on my part, but what if while making all these episodes, Valve is also secretly working on HL3 as we marvel in the episodes of HL2? That would be awesome despite how unlikely it may be :naughty:

I think the story line is already roughly outlined through all 4 episodes and into HL3...

but I imagine they will hold off until they have a better idea of next gen advances. For instance, if physics cards will take off and how they will mature, DX10 or later tech such as whats being seen in some of the Crysis previews... plus reaction and input to the Episodes.

This is not to say preliminary work is not being laid, but there is still some rumor (that Gabe denies) that HL3 will be done outside of Valve.

OH NOEEEESSSS!!!!11!!11! It cant be don't outside of Valve!!!!!

I've heard that the fourth episode will be done outside of Valve, and is somewhat outside of the timeline (i.e. it is not right after Episode 3).

I reckon that when the team for Episode 2 have finished, they'll start work on either preliminal HL3 work or TF2. Both would be good news. XD

Valve, having set themselves only three episodes of the 4 hours length to tell the story of the immediate aftermath of Half-Life 2, seems to me to be gearing up to leading into a sequel (whether a full blown game of episodic sequel doesn't really matter IMO). If "HL2 Episodes" is the final Half-Life experience, we're already 1/3rd into that and we've moved only in small steps from Half-Life 2. That gives them only a little time to relate Humanity's struggle for freedom and then their retaliation. That would be incredibly abrubt and I can't see it happening. Plus, the fact that they're called "Half-Life 2 : Episode X" seems to me to say that Valve are holding back on then going on to make the next big thing. If Half-Life 2: Episode 3 was to be about Earth's retaliation against the combine, the "Half-Life 2" part of the title would be somewhat redundant.

If anything, they'd have another company make the 4th episode as an aside storyline (bringing back shepard?!?) while valve gets busy on HL3. This way, we don't have to wait eons between ep4 and the next installment. Mind me this is just wishfull thinking on my part.

Isn't Episode 4 supposed to be like a prequel to HL3? As in, it leads up to its beginning.

What? Are there going to be only 4 Half Life 2 Episodes? I thought there were going to be 6.

Samon can you clarify this for me???

I just hope the later EP's, or even HL3, doesn't require me to upgrade my hardware just to play it.
VALVe seems to know that not everyone can afford a souped-up system with all the latest bells and whistles.

Rest assured my friend, Half-Life 3 will require a MAJOR upgrade. Err ... wait :cheese:

First of all, I can almost guarantee you that VALVe would not outsource HL3... That's like bungie giving Halo 3 to EA to work on... It doesn't make sense for them to outsource their mainstream game!

I'm sure some preliminary work has begun on HL3, but the majority of the work is being on the episodes...

Er.. Episode 4, what? I don't remember anything official about this? When was the news post?

They said that the half-life series would be a trilogy, with the episodes inbetween hl2 and hl3. They also said that hl3 would be released "alot quicker" than the timespan between hl1 and hl2.
