How do the source's leak anyway?

The recent leak (its not really a leak), happened by Valve putting the script, textures etc. into the CS: S foldre for Cyber Cafes, which eventually got leaked by some idiot who got hold of the a copy and now people are reading it.

The original "HACK" was because the VALVe network (And Gabe's own PC with a copy of HL2) was open to the internet. After that they seperate the systems, ... they unplugged it, if you will. So now, as far as I know, Gabe's and every other online PC is on a seperate network then those the game development go on.

The leak happens when something leaks out off the companies computers.

This is correct as far as I know.

Developers don't like to run isolated networks (when is the last time you sat in front of a computer for 8 hours and didn't check something on the internet?) Security just went lax temporarily...somehow.

The leak was only popular becuase people downloaded it to test the game on their machines.

They would have reduced the number of people who obtained the leak astronomically if they released a small official demo. After all, who would download a buggy stolen maybe virus ridden hack when you can download an offical single level demo.

imo its not so much valves security sucks, as the fact that hl2 was a sought after commodity. for instance, IE seems like a security nightmare because of all the spyware it gets (pre service pack 2), but its basically because all the spyware programmers designed their spyware for IE since it has the most usage of any browser.

a lot of game companies beefed up their security after this incident, they probably had similiar security to valve, but didn't have a game that was so sought after. not to say that valve had awesome security and a victim of circumstance, but before the leak all game companies didn't have a main focus on security.
