How can I put this? Religion is probably the ultimate influence on Human Society. Even money, hard as this is to believe, bows to it.
So i guess, Sulkdodd's question of 'How has religion no affected you' is probably more valid, seeing as anything remotely connected with other people is probably tinged with religion. But I'll answer my own question first.
Religion has affected me in that in shaped my moral beliefs. I suppose my first exposure to religion was probably as a child, being taken to temples and shrines and stuff by my parents. (Traditional Chinese religion, with the incense and the praying and the reincarnation mua-hey). Scripture classes in my Primary School probably introduced the Christian and Catholic religions to me.
I note that, when I was younger, the Christian and Catholic religions were the most appealing at the time; they had the money to hire good teachers, and everybody around me was Christian. But I suppose that god isn't really important when you're 5. Or 10.
Ome_Vince said:Exactly my point, there are people around that say that! Those are called fanatics!
There are also billions of religious people who dont do that and/or care about such things.
We're focussing everything on Christianity and Islam, how about Hindoeism, Budhism ( i know officially isnt a religion but can be considered one )?
I for one grew up in various countries, and eventually when i was 13 moved back to Holland ( was born there too btw ).
I lived in Islamic countries and Christian countries. My worst esperience was when i was about 10-12 and in Africa was forced to go to a school called : "the new jesus christ people". This was a fanatical Christian school which made us sing gospels all day and told us we shouldnt believe in Santa-Claus because Santa = Satan and presents are overthrowing the nature of Christmas: jesus christ. Looking back at it, that was the most fanatical Christian school ever.
Now, that didnt do much for me at the time, i thought it was normal as i was young.
Then we moved back to Holland and i visited a Christian school and thats where i learned how it should be. We had a Christian school with Muslims, Christians and Atheists on it, and everybody was equal and nobody cared
(this was a Katholic school too).
So you could say i actually KNOW both sides of the story, hence i dispise generalisation.
If you want something to hate, chose : fanatics and people who see the world as Black&white. For those are the ones ( and they can also be found alot in religions ) that create all of these problems...
CptStern said:it's not my fault christians are disproportionately against most social issues
Sulkdodds said:Are they? Or is that just the vocal minority? Because you know, most Christians I meet are not.
Raziaar said:I think the problem is your vast, all encompassing blanket statements.
bhudism is somehow not all right, like don't care about anything in this world, look into yourself, then how the hell are you going to live? you're gonna eat shit and drink piss for a living? The main reason Christians and Islamic people try to convert, is because their religion is focussed on pursuading the "world" of "gods love". Bhudism is focussed around your own inner self. Which is a more admirable principle, and i believe Christianity + Islam should merge into such a state.

That made me hate christians in my area, with their biased ways and fanaticism.
And the 'teachers' were all " YOu will go to hell" and shit.

rambler said:i dislike religion, but i don't dislike religious people (other than thinking they're just a bit thick). of course some religious stuff is bad, e.g. the pope telling african countries that are running rampant with aids that condoms don't work.
my great uncles and aunts were all killed in the concentration camps, my grandad escaped and all the remaining family turned their back on religion, not necessarily because of the war but just because they realised how stupid it is. i mean, c'mon, a guy who controlls everything and is everywhere and when you die you go to a lovely place blah blah blah.
I've read enough of your posts in the history of this goddamn website to know your personal opinion and how you shove it down the throats of everyone who mentions it.CptStern said:sigh ....once again you jump in throw your 2 cents without reading what came before ..how am I insulting people you know in that particular sentence? how am I, in any way, singling out any one person? ..really Erestheux either join in on the debate or butt out, I dont apprecate these cat calls from the peanut gallery especially when your contribution amounts to little more than "ya! hear hear!"
Ridiculing your what, exactly? Your religion? When did I say I have no problem with people ridiculing yours? When did I come to the defense of anyone in any of my posts?CptStern said:yet you have no problem with people rediculing mine? drop it Erestheux, in my opinion it's not worth it
Uhh, what? How are my posts any more lock-ensueing than any of your's? I think you're just avoiding responding to me. So okay, whatever.CptStern said:just drop it and let other people express their beliefs before this thread is locked

Hah, make a thread on what? "Why Erestheux doesn't like it when Stern addresses Religion." Teehee.Glirk Dient said:Stern is dropping it...your posts are continuing it. That is why yours are lock-ensuing and his are not. Make a thread in the politics section and I will be more than happy to debate this issue, for now leave it out of this thread.

Usually when somebody says something against you and is expecting some kind of rebuttle, whether it is an apology or a "You're wrong", one get's discouraged when they say "Drop it." Its not that person's topic to drop. :|
Hey, but whatever, if Stern doesn't want to respond, fine. I'm stopping now.
Man. People never get me when I press a point. All I want is a simple "Sorry, I'll try to be more sensitive in the future." Or even a "Sorry, not going to happen."
