No engine's made it past 4? The Quake 3 engine keeps popping up all over the place (i.e. CoD).

Yes, until hl3, hl1 has lasted 5 years, and is only JUST starting too slow down, now hl2 is even more moddable, so yea... till hl3..

I think it all depends on the market. As "Mr. Redundant" said: "hey... wheres the "until HL3" option?"

If there are no engines which can compete and it's as flexible as valve have stated, than it will surely last 5years or more. If a more customizable engine comes along, than it will fade out sooner.

Because it's main competition is John Carmack, and with Doom3 being released not too terribly long from now, than I can't see anyone else (as of now) really putting up a tremendous challenge to it in the near future(even though the Doom engine might be "prettier" I can't see it being as easy to use or as flexible).

I guess 5+ years (unless something awesome comes out)

CS:CZ is a new game based on the HL1 engine which came out in 1998. So yah, that would mean the HL1 engine is still being used to make games 5 years later.

Anyway, it will last forever. Old engines are always fun. Even the Quake engine (no, not the pseudo HL1 Quake engine) is still being tampered with.

Edit: there are of course limits. An engine like Duke Nukem 3D is pointless, as its only 2.5D. With a few weeks of learning, you could write a better engine with DX9.
