I know, many of you will think, "why is he praising Valve for still holding out on this game?" Think about it. How many other companies would wait this long and up until the very last minute to perfect their game? not very many. They have a blue collar mentality, they want things done right the very first time, releasing as little updates as possible after the game ships. From a viewpoint as Steam, it makes sense even though it's taking a while.

It's what I've always said, and I stand by it. Valve delayed Half-Life for about two years in total to get it perfect, and if they hadn't, most of us certainly wouldn't be sitting here waiting for the sequel.

I think it was 1 year. It was going to come out in November 1997 but came out in November 1998. Still, it was worth it. This is my argument against people claiming that they MUST have known Half-Life 2 would be delayed back in June last year because there's been a delay of a year.

But Valve aren't afraid to spend more time on a game to get it perfect. That's why the delay was so long, they had the time to make it even better.
 
No problem with delays, but I got a problem with the constant fake deadlines. If you are going to spend another year perfecting the game, I applaud you for your commitment, but don't tell us it's going to be finished in 1 month.
 
overall, I agree...however, if Valve introduced HL2 at this year's E3 instead of last years, I wouldn't have been bothered by it...why? because the absence of HL2 was ofcourse something that HL fans had wondered about, but when Valve did finally announce it, it opened a whole can of worms that has led to now (code theft, lombardi's overexaggerated release estimates, ATI vouchers,etc.)

Well said. I totally agree with you, but I still feel Valve should find a balance between perfectionism and finishing a job. I applaud them anyway!
 
I'm glad they worked so long on this game, now it will be awesome. Think of how much it would have sucked if they released it a year ago? But they still shouldn't have said they would, that was bad.

noone from valve said it would be released in one month.. the only official thing I heard was summer..

I believ ehe's talking about last year in September when they said 1 month and then when it came to it, they delayed a year.

I'm refering to the Semp. 2003 announcement. I would have no problem with Valve taking their time, but why say semp 2003 when now it's obvious that the game was not closed to finish. Stop teasing us Valve and better make HL2 the greatest thing since HL.
 
I also like how they are like... "april... no wait, june.... wait how about summer?"
 
I agree that the delay might be good for the game, but as a proud owner of a All-In-Wonder 9600Pro, I am am a bit peeved at having to hold out until the next year to play HL2 on my nice new video card.

I think I may have tossed the box and part of it may be needed to redeem the game!! =8-O

oh well, I'll gladly shell out the $$ for the game anyway, but I bet ATI is not thrilled with the delay either.
 
I got lucky. Most people upgraded for the Semp 2003 release (9600XT, like my friend), but I was poor so I couldn't. Since then the min requirements have gone up and the stress test is murder, so it's either upgrade again or play at medium settings.

PS: This is based on the stress test, the game play might actually be better optimized and less stressful.
 
You can at least see that Valve has worked in the year between e3 2003 and e3 2004, the planks are a great example.
 
You are sooooo wrong we should all praise 3D realms for Duke Nukem 4 Ever there you got a company that have been working on a game for... well from...Uhmm before Half Life if im not wrong :P
 
The bugs can be resolved with patches.

They aren´t perfecting a shit and the y jus´t don´t have it ready.

I don't want to download a million patches once a game comes out (Deus Ex 2). I'd rather it be like Prince of Persia for the PC with zero patches and 0 bugs.

The perfect game doesn´t exist and i rather be interested in longeving my games life by downloading patches like each two months than sticking to the same game for six months.

What's keeping Valve going after five whole years? Sheer Bloodymindedness...

I joke. I think it's great that valve take the effort to make sure their game is the best it can be before they ship it.

What would HL have been like if they had shipped it on time? We would have had Barney the ghost-faced military policeman and Gordon the mad space biker with a head like a misshapen ice-cube. (See the old publicity shots for what I mean) Not the makings of a great game.

You're confusing patches with mods. Patches fix problems that weren't or couldn't be resolved before the game went gold. This happens often, but games vary (remember the FarCry 1.2 patch disaster).

Mods add new features to games and do not concert themselves with fixing bugs, but rather try to make the game better (like the Doom 3 mod, where the monsters do not vanish).
