I need help!!!!!

I've just started playing Half Life, yesterday and I'm already stuck. I'm at the part in Blast Pit area at the fan. I've already got the fan turned on and keep trying to jump into the air stream and it doesn't seem to work, all the I keep doing is killing myself. I've watched the walk through on youtube as well as read the game guide and I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong. Please, help!

dont you have to be blown to the ceiling then you break through the blockade with your crowbar and then find the vent?

You turn the fan on and quickly you sprint and go up the ladder avoid getting hit, then when the fan is at full speed jump on it and using the crowbar destroy the planks at the top.

If you ever get stuck again I advise using this walkthrough.

That probably shouldn't be happening umm maybe you're jumping in the wrong place or something.
