i needs a bit of camera help

If you, my good friends , don't remember, (lots of commas) I'm working on a side-scrolling mod and I was wondering what some of you would consider the best way of panning the camera. My problem right now is the camera is centered on the player. Is easy enough to give it some yaw and distance, but what would you suggest I do to give it more of that side-scroller feel. I'll post a pic to help explain what I'm trying to do.

I don't believe I'll have any trouble getting it to move back and forth depending on which way you're facing. However, I'm having trouble uncentering the player.

On a side note, the mod almost has a name.

Would you be able to code in an entity that halts the camara, so you could have sections where you have to defeat all the players on screen before continuing?
