I've been getting sub-par performance from system for a long time.
Specs:
Amd II 640 3ghz Quad. 1x4gb cheapo DDR3 @ 1333mhz, GTX570 1280mb.

I'm upgrading to:
AMD Phenom II X6 Black Edition 1090T 3.2GHz, With a compatible Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 SLI mobo. And going for 2x4gb 1600mhz performance RAM.
Am I insane in thinking I will get a performance boost with this while still using the GTX 570 1280mb GPU?
The GPU in question is a 'KFA2 GTX 570' Which is meant to be a pimped 570 and so only slight below par to a standard 580.

I've been told by the ever so reliable interwebs that my previous CPU & RAM combo have been unable to keep up with my card.

I can play everything I own on maximum with a moderately priced 460, I'd say that your ram is what's holding you back.

Aye cheers for confirming my lack of insanity. I'm hoping when I can afford to SLI my 570 it will keep me happy for at least 18 month.
Edit: I'm curious, if you don't mind, what res do you normally play on?
I'm running a native 1650x 1080

Yeah, what games are you playing? My system/card are a bit behind yours, and I'm good to go on all but the most demanding game eye candy.

I'm running at 1920x1080. Also, you may want to look at the i5 - 2500K, it's absolutely the best bang for your buck on the market.
