Hello everyone, my question is maybe kinda late but with all the hype for the Orange Box release I have started playing HL2 and HL2 : Episode 1 all over again, but just realized that THERE ARE NO footsteps sounds!!, and my character seems like he's floating when he walks losing all the inmersion this incredible game can have, so please advise about how to enable this footsteps sounds, think maybe not in game but maybe with some console options or maybe third party mods.

Thanks in advance!

uh maybe u have noclip on? go into console and type in noclip

No, he's obviously not having noclip on, or he wouldn't be expecting footsteps. :|

All multiplayer Source games has them, the singleplayer aren't supposed to have it.

In multiplayer there is a body for the player. only it isn't visible in first person. The footsteps can as well sound for the player.

In single player, however, there is normally no body at all.

Really? I am pretty sure I heard footsteps playing through hl2.

Man that's weird.

I'm afraid I always heard footsteps lol :p
Maybe you had the same problem

sir, of course single player has noclip I do it all the time.....you just have to enable sv cheat to 1 first

He means that someone who has noclip on is obviously going to know that he has it on and won't be expecting footsteps.

He then says that all multiplayer Source games have footsteps and the singleplayer ones don't.

I, on the other hand, have always heard footsteps in HL2.

Can we keep him? He's adorable!

I've always heard footsteps. Or at least, I swear I have.

There are always footsteps.
But PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF HL, don't start suggesting, you should see your other body parts in HL besides the hands.

It does NOT ruin immersion.
What does is that when you COULD see your legs and you are standing on a ledge, on leg always seems to float above nothing.

As i said in another thread, ranting about Gordon climbing ladders without using hands, do you really think seeing Gordons various bodyparts is so friggin' important, when you have cool alien things to destroy?

Your starting to remind me a dude on the internet, who said "gameplay doesn't matter at all. It's the graphics that make a good game".

All I said was that legs floating in mid-air ruin immersion. No need to get so defensive.

Footstep sounds have been in every single Valve game and 3rd party mod for both gldsrc and source.

Yeah there are footsteps. They change for different materials too, like and, dirt, metal, floor, etcetera.

Just listen more closely.

OK guys, i see there has been a lot of response here, and i appreciate it.

Now, someone think that noclip could be on, no way man, isn't that "noclip on" the command that makes you go through walls and stuff like if you were a ghost??, if so, no way i'm gonna ruin a game like this using that, all i asked was how do i do to hear footsteps in HL2, i have ran game again and have realized that NPCs DO make footsteps sound when they walk, but me?, still no footsteps, or are these footsteps sounds so low that i can barely hear them?, could be, but again, i really DO need to hear footsteps to get total inmersion on game, if not, as told before i feel like a dead corpse floating around with no weight neither life...

It depends. I've noticed footsteps are most noticeable on wood or metal. While just walking normally, yes they're not as loud as I've heard from other games but they are there.

sv_cheats 1
sv_footsteps 1

If that doesn't work do as you're told and verify the game cache.

The loud footsteps with the combine models in HL2DM annoy me. It sounds like you're walking around with pockets full of quarters.

Seems that sv_footsteps command did the trick, thanks so much for your help!
