h0w lam3 it should br3ak. gabe said wood will act like wood now we c its bullshit. i c now very few things will break in halflife two. it will be about like halflife one with regular boards breakable when they need to be broken and nothing else. lame.

[sarcasm]Wow, you're so correct, Screw Half-Life 2 i'm dedicating my life to Commander Keen 4[/sarcasm]

I think the decision was made so that not every little bit of wood was breakable otherwise if there was a firefight in a forest and mortars were raining down, you're computer would blow up and kill you in the process.
Also you'd be able to blow through the floors in the apartment building, which would be cool, but it might alter the course of the level if you blow up a floor above you where important NPC's are.

Anyway, the engine would be capable of this but it was just a design decision. Just like Doom 3 and those plasticy shaders. or with Far Cry and how it has a specular map on every single goddamn surface

I think it's like Gabe said: Objects are made destructible by the mapper. So (almost) every object in the game can shatter, but Valve didn't make the trees have parts in that map. We'll see if they'll map their trees cuttable in the final game.

check out the full e3 2004 video , at time 10:22 the guy beside gordon on the left is trying to shoot the strider with a rocket launcher, but the tree is in the way and when he shoots it nothing happens to the tree at all. i thought it would break or something. its not a big deal though , just something to talk about

This shows VALVe's concern about enviromentalistic problems of the future.

If everything where destroyable think about this.

Your running backwards down a corridor firing your last few bullets at an alien. You swiftly duck around a corner and come face to face with a machine gun postion. You expertly duck behind a few wooden planks the gunner unaware of your presence. You pull out a grenade and pull the pin raising your arm to throw it at the machine gun nest. The machingunner notices your movements and opens fire in your general direction. The planks are ripped to peices and your body riddled with bullets. Game Over

Now imagine if the planks didn't break and you managed to lob that grenade killing the gunner, and moving to his position to grab some much needed supplies. As said by someone else some objects should be indestructable as to allow tactics and stop the player from going somewhere the mapper doesn't want him to go.

I noticed in the E3 2004 video that Gordon doesn't TALK! Nor does he go to the toilet! AND he has a HUD in his brain I don't have one STFU Valve!!11 LOLXZ????++

ALYX ISNT A REAL PERSON UNREALISTIC SHIT

O I C U R M T... Headed.

omfg..i can't believe someone actually thinks: "hey , let's make a stupid thread about this uninteresting subject"

Yeah, great idea, lets start a thread about something that doesn't matter, and no-one gives a f*ck about...

As for the tree not being destroyed:

WOoooooooooo a tree not being destroyed shit lets bomb valve with Napalm.

some of you lot are such moaning bast*rds! Chill out its a computer game

What do you propose we talk about over the next 4 months while we wait for a release date? This place is getting stale!! We've covered everything 10 times over.

Perhaps we should recruit more "Valve owe us nothing" soldiers to create "Valve owe us nothing" threads??

In the mean time, continue to post in my thread of the discussion of "What is this?"

if they took the effort to make trees destructable when hit then you'd eventually complain that when a building didnt get a hole in it after you shot it with the rpg that it was some crime against humanity too. when they fixed that for you youd complain how you couldnt make a crater in the ground and have any rain that accumulated make a pool of water in it. And when they finally fixed that for you instead of just releasing the sodding game youd complain that the environment was too destructable and that youd fallen in a hole youd made with grenades and couldnt get up.

OH NOES!!!!!!!!!111111111 TEH GAME ISNT REAL LIFEE0rszzzzzzzZZ!!!!1 run adn HIED!!!1111111

yep your right. so dont buy halflife2. one less counter-strike noob to worry about in mp, and one less idiot spending his mommys money.

look in the E3 2004 video when he shows off the physics and he breaks the wood with the crowbar. It breaks in the most realistica way ive seen in a game. As for the tree not blowing up i think theyll fix that, if not then who cares!

Omg And Theres Not 40,000 Different Kinds Of Guns! And Wtf Why Cant We Have Fluid Water Physics? Omg Hl2 Doesnt Have A Dynamic World Where Everything Is Like It Is In Real Life? **** Half Life 2! And Holy Shit Did You Notice In The E3 Vid You Cant Destroy Every Pixel On The Screen? Goddamit **** You Valve

LOL!

As a programmer also, I'd be losing my hair thinking of all the things people are gonna expect from this game!

Anyway, if he used his hands, he'd never be able to climb that fast. He's obviously relying on his initial forward momentum as simulated in the physics engine to keeps him on the rungs. :)

IIRC, one of the previews mentioned the possibility of using Gordon's momentum and friction to run up walls, or actually jump off the side of a wall. Anyone think it'd be possible?

Could you be less leet?

And I can't believe some of you could get so worked up after this mundane detail.

One would think trees would be an obvious thing to make destructable.A bit dissapointing, source seems to be the same as farcry's engine.Lets hope the story and interaction aren't. :bounce:

 yep thats pretty much my expression when i read that.

It's called entertainment, dude. Kind of like playing a game...

I cant belive this turned into 5 pages! HOW PEOPLE HOW!??!?!

Have you noticed that he now faces directly at the ladder instead of being able to climb it from all sides? That was what I was looking for to be fixed and it was.

Even if a rocket hit a tree I doubt it would break... They are very strong things. It would make a hole I am sure.

Not putting ur weapon away to climb ladders is so old skool it's lame ;)

It's scary how some guys on this forum actually want to get a plug in the neck.

Dude how many posts a page are you displaying?

It's probably part of what the combine has done to City 17 - created a force field around the trees to preserve the environment. Ya, that must be it... =)

Jeez this is getting pathetic.. someone please close this thread, with probably one of the most stupid subjects ever ...

Yeah, this has gone rather too far. Closed.
