Installed... now what?! why wont HL2 work!?!

It took me forever to figure out how to get steam and everthing installed but i eventually got it done. But ever thing like to work against me and not with me, every time i solve one problem in encounter a new one... After I installed everthing I rebooted my computer and was ready to bust'a cap in someone as in HL2. I click the icon and it says "preparing to launch Half Life 2" so i say " sweet!" ... few seconds later... the little green box gose away and the mouse comes up with the hour glass next to, so i jus think: it loading, give it some time... well a minute or 2 goes by and now i know somethings wrong. I hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete to see if my computers even running it and what'd ya know, nothin'. I try the other games: CS:S and HL2:LC, same thing... can someone please help me out and tell me whats go'n on and how i can fix it.

Start STEAM (Not Any Games, Just STEAM), and check if your games are updated.

i did that that... i think... you gotta understand that im a hard core noob so go slow. I did try opening it in steam and it did that same thing...

It says that its 100% ready. i right clicked HL2 and made sure it was set for alwasy udate.

I had the exact same problem. what fixed it for me was to install the latest version of direct x drivers... 9.0c AND the latest nvidea drivers for my geforce card. i had to install both of them. but mine was doing exactly the same. it sounds like a graphics card related crash at startup.
so make sure you have dx 9.0c installed and latest drivers for your card.

fixed the prob for me.

thanx, i know i have direct x 9. I look into the my card drivers to, but i just got the new card and its working for other no- steam operated games...

ok i looked it up. i only had direct x 9b. i installed 9c from microsoft.com and that worked... sorta...then that whole: "every time i fix one problem i encounter a new one" thing happend. it launches the game, dose the whole valve intro then goes to the blury screen that says loading in the black box at the bottom right. Just that that point ( or a few seconds latter) my screen goes blank and my whole computer restarts! whats up with that!?

You are either overheating, or your psu can't handle the load. Either or, most likely.

What are your computer specs? Most importantly what video card do you have? You really need to get the latest drivers. I take it from your last post that you never installed any drivers for your card.

yes yes... i have the graphics card drivers installed and im not over heating, i check the temp. and my computer meets the minimum requirements for the game.

Here are my specs:

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) (2600.xpclient.010817-1148)
Processor: mobile AMD Athlon(tm) XP-M 1400+, ~1.2GHz
Memory: 384MB RAM
Page File: 246MB used, 652MB available

Alright... thanx every one, I got it work'n and boy oh boy does it kick ass! my problem was in the card driver. the card needed an upgrade that didnt come with the cd so i had to get it off there site... thanx again everone and happy gameing!
