I have a legal copy of Blue Shift but I lost the CD key so I have one from a website that gives them. If I try to intall BS into steam with that CD key will steam see it as a copied key and hit me with teh banning stick?

yes, you will. but if you have the old CD from BS, you should be able to install it outside steam...

Steam : Do you own Half-life 1?

ríomhaire : Yes i do, if i didn't i deserve to be shot and banned by the mods here.

Steam :
Well ríomhaire, because you have HL1, you can download blueshift from steam, for free, hows that!? You don't need your disc or old versions!

ríomhaire :
Really? I didn't know so i made a thread on hl2.net. Btw Mr Steam any naked vortigaunt mods in the works?

Steam : erm....yes but the build was stolen, so we had to give up.

Just download it through steam... for free.

Seriously...

If they figure it out, yes. Remember all those Cracked CS.S users getting banned? And given they will be able to see its on that site, it shouldn't be hard to figure out.

it would be rather comical to be steam-banned for using a fake CD-key for a game that you don't even need to pirate to get for free...

Do you have any idea how hard it is to type without spaces???
word - space - delete - *Bugger* word - space - delete - *Bugger* word - space - delete - *Bugger*.
You did that on purpose. Your life, however, is like a box of LIVE HAND GRENADES.

Freaking flat mate bought the first freaking season of family freaking guy on DVD. I've been doing that all day. Get it out of my head, please.

you don't need the CD...
or are you talking about your half life 1 cd?

Games I own that are currently missing.

1. Deus Ex
2. Blue Shift
3. Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault
4. Mortal Kombat Trilogy
5. Heavy Metal: FAKK
6. Age of Empires
7. Max Payne(Actually my cousin's and thankfully he hasn't asked for it back yet.)
8. Homeworld
9. Star Wars: Dark Forces

I'm not sure if this breaks the rules but theoretically is it legal to download a warez version of a game if you own it legally?

Seems like a grey area, really. I know you can have a rom of a game as long as you actually own it.

Then again, some of those games are old enough that now they're really cheap on ebay. Or you could check at a game store.

It is. If you own the game, you own the right to play the game and you are technically allowed to download CD cracks.

As long as you can prove it if someone comes knocking on your door you won't have a problem...in my mind it legal cause you bought it. but in there minds they want your money :flame:

My opinion: if you lose the CD on which the game comes, you're entitled to find a backup from somewhere. However, if you lose the CD and your CD-Key, your game has truely been stolen and you need a new one.

I have a Quake III CD key which I paid for legitmately but no CD, which has gone missing. If someone else has my CD they cannot play Quake III with it alone, they need a CD Key, and they haven't yet stolen mine so I can use it.

Either way, unless we're talking Valve (which in the case of Half-Life 1, we are), I don't think developers and publishers care that much.

Well I kept the boxes for most of them but not the cases.

:( ive lost farcry.

Someone stole my NBA Jam. I bet it was my neighbor 8 years ago.

I lost my Quake 3.
Though since Quake 3 didn't need a cd to play I just copied it and it's expansion onto 2 cd's ^_^.

I lost my Quake 3 too, but I got another copy free with a modem or something.

Do you really need Steam in order to play the game? I thought you could install it and play it without Steam even knowing about it.

Wow.... ID must have some kind of dimensional rift machine that randomly snatches back copies of Quake 3 in a bid to make us all purchase it again. Weird that 3 of us all lost it... must be a loseable game...

Edit:

Yes, this is also true. Mind you, I get the impression that Riomhaire lost both his HL1 and Blue Shift CDs so he cannot use the old installer anymore, because he's lost them. He was probably hoping to get the game over steam, but he probably doesn't have his legitimate CD Keys anymore, which is a bad thing to get your Steam account locked over.
