OK, we all know you have to download a heap of stuff to play HL2 in the first place. How long is that gonna take on 512 ADSL? Some dude said 7 hours, but the guy at EB Games, (when I bought HL2), said it would only take that long on dial up. I haven't installed the game yet. Can anyone shed some light on this...?

I have 512 Cable, and >2 GB takes 6-7 hours to download.

Leave the PC on for the night and everything will be downloaded for sure.

HL2 with 512 ADSL

Yeah, 6-7 hours is obscenely long though. I had a look at some other forums, seems the time can vary from an hour to the above mentioned, depending on how busy the servers are. I guess if everyones downloading the same stuff...

Wait, are you installing from a CD or just downloading it from Steam? Because you mention you bought the game at EB Games, then it should only take about 10 minutes to install.

Yep, I bought the physical retail cd pack, whatever its called... So is the whole game on the cds? I was under the impression once you'd installed the game from the cds, you STILL had to download some stuff from Valve through Steam JUST to play the game? Or is the über download necessary only if you didn't purchase a physical copy?

You only have to download the Patches once you install the game which don't take that long ON A 56K.

From scratch, it'll take about 7 hours yeah... but the updates will probably take 2 hours absolute maximum. Probably more like half an hour (I haven't tried - I downloaded the entire thing after reformating... at least I have a pretty box. Actually, I have a pretty shitty box, but what the hey.)

I installed HL2 when I was on dial-up and all the updates took me about 2 hours. Whoever says it takes 7 hours for the updates is talking bull, that's only if you're downloading the entire game. On 512 I reckon kupo is probably right, half an hour, give or take a bit.

One thing to bear in mind is that the actual install and decryption time varies slightly depending on your CPU speed. I remember hearing that somewhere ages ago.

Yeah I have cable and it only took a few minutes.

Just make sure you download it now, not when a new update comes out or Lost Coast is released :)
