Is 1000 dollars a month a good paycheck? Can you live on it in Oregon?

So there is my question...I'm really bad at handling different currencies, I barely know what a good paychekc is in euros. Let alone in dollars!

There is this job opening in Oregon and I'm thinking of applying for it... but is it worth it? Is it possible to live solely on this amoutn of money? I do have savings, but I haven't been saving my whole life to get rid of it during a stay in the states.

help appreciated thank you :)

consider that it would be 12k per year. Unless you've got free housing or roomates you can trust, 12k a year is a pitiful amount of money to live on. I would advise a second job to supplement the 1k per month check if you wish to live on your own.

well, I would get some assistance from my university for living expenses, but I guess I should think of it in terms of whether it is a good pay for a graduate student... Students are supposed to starve, right? :p

That's a terrible pay.

how much are you supposed to be getting from your university if you study in oregon?

They don't specify how much you'd get from the university, only that they'd pay the fees and help with the living expenses... maybe they really don't expect anyone to realize how little 1k is?? us finns are such a humble, modest people used to living on bark bread O.o

It's less than you make working at any job 40 hours a week.

That's about $12,000 a year. That in pounds would be a good salary. Especially for starting out. But in Dollars? I doubt it.

that in pounds would be a good salary

you think 6000 pounds a year is a good salary? minimum full time wage is like 10000

i can just about live with my 22k per year (family+mortgage)

No, I meant ?12,000. Which of course I can't write, thus making my attempt at demonstrating to you what I meant, futile.

Edit: Or what Skeletor said :p

that's lower than minimum wage here :O
If it helps, graduate starting rates in Ireland are ?22-27k ($32-40k) with arts at the bottom echelon and commerce students at the upper end and engineers, scientists, doctors et al in between. It's probably broadly comparable with other countries although I saw some ridiculous salaries for jobs in the City in London (?1000 a week for a graduate? :( )

Commerce grads get more than doctors/engineers/scientists? WUT!

No it's not. If you've just come out of uni, or even pre-uni, it's a pretty good wage.

On 24k right out of university you would die of starvation and exposure because your grant payments a year will eat you alive.

Only because you're earning enough to pay them back. Keep below the boundary and you won't have to pay a damn thing :p. Besides, you live in the USofA, I'm talking about GBP.

There is no way in hell you can live in the US for $1000 a month unless your rent will be payed for and you don't have to do any travel (you don't need a car). With rent and a car payment with insurance your entire $1000 a month check will go directly to that and you will have nothing left over for food and other necessities. Find out what kind of support your university will provide you. But what kind of job are you applying for that only pays $1000? If you are going to be working full time thats only $6.25 an hour, and keep in mind this is before taxes, after taxes your paycheck will be closer to $800 a month. So unless this is some kind of work experiance program that has to do with your education I would pass on it and look for something better. I don't know how Oregon is but here in New Mexico you can get a decent call center job doing sales are technical support starting out at $10 an hour.

I pay $9000 per year in RENT alone. Then car insurance is %$##$% ridiculous in Michigan $2000 per year & I have a good record. Food will cost you at least $2500 per year. There are ways I could cut costs (sharing a cheaper apt), but even without tax I couldn't support base-line expenses on $12000 per year.

$12000 / 40 hours per week / 50 weeks per year = $6.00 per hour.
(52 weeks technically, but I round it)

That's minimum wage! You could make better working at McDonalds or Walmart anywhere in the country. Try to make at least $20,000 USD (which is $10/hour).

That's because it's effected by London. :p

London has this bubble which seems to fade the further you get.

That "bubble" is actually PURE AWESOME. The further you get away from it, the less awesome things get.

Meh. I'll be moving down south-west at the earliest opportunity.

With the cost of living on the west coast, it would be possible to live on that amount of cash flow per month, but it would be very, very difficult.

On the other hand, you could join the service and leave most, if not all, of your money issues behind you.

If you're looking at Portland, OR, then you don't really need a car (so no insurance payments or gas). There's pretty decent public transportation, and most people ride their bikes everywhere anyways. You'll definitely need to find some good roommates though, because housing and other living expenses are a bit hefty in that area. If you can get another couple hundred dollars a month, you might be able make it work though. $12k/year is pretty low though... is it full time?

Deepest sympathy.

I don't see what's supposed to be good about London. Virtually the whole city is a miserable, depressing, ghetto-filled, run down shithole. The people are very unfriendly, there is no community of any kind, the East End is a hotbed of Islamic extremism and pretty much everyone who lives in London is living hand to mouth because it's just so expensive. Not to mention that getting anywhere is a nightmare because the transport system is so utterly overstretched and the standard of driving is both dangerously and criminally low.

It costs me a little over $800 a month just to pay bills, rent and eat. If you get loans, or financial aid from the government or your school, then you can easily live off that money. If your school offers dorm housing, then its probably even less that what I spend, and if not, just get a roommate to split the cost of an apartment.

You should move to Cambridge! You're less likely to be squished on your bike!

Hello, I live in the East End and I love it. Most of my neighbours are Islamic and Muslim and they are awesome people. Not because they're Muslim and Islamic but because they are sweet women and men, with lovely children.

I don't know what you mean about transport, the buses from outside my house run every 5 minutes, and TWENTY FOUR HOURS, the tubes run every 2-3 minutes and I never have problems getting into central London.

London isn't run down at all, It's beautiful. There's hardly a "GHETTO" compared to some cities in the world, and no I'm not talking about war-torn or third world countries.

That you have nice neighbours doesn't change the fact that it's a hotbed of Islamic extremism.

Try using the roads. Try using public transport when you aren't fit and able-bodied.
The tube is shit - it's the most expensive public transport system in the entire world, and it has failures on a daily basis. It's packed to capacity during peak time and it doesn't run 24 hours a day. It's also only any good for going from the suburbs to the city.

It is run down, horribly so. The only parts of East London that aren't run down are Canary Wharf and Wanstead. North-west London is grimy and depressing just the same - Wembley, Kilburn, Dollis Hill, Neasden, Willesden...to name but a few areas.
And how on earth can London NOT be run down, when 40% of its inhabitants live below the poverty line, and the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Islington and Newham are amongst the top 10 areas in the entire country for the worst quality of life?
The "some cities" you refer to are no doubt other global cities with similar problems to London - compare London with a city like Exeter, Bath or Oxford and you'll see a very different story.

I'm gonna move to Exeter, but yeah. Nearly getting hit by a car is a daily occurence on a London commute...riding anywhere else is several times safer.
