Is it me, or do the sounds and music feel very diffrent from other games?

I dunno, from the sound of a crowbar, to the techno rave, I felt like the sounds in this game were totally unique. they feel completely diffrent from other games that I have played.

who else thinks this?

Yeah, I agree. The sounds are much more unique and amazing. They just sound so great. :D

a lot of the stuff does sound unique to me aswell...specially the combine alarm sounds. very chilling to me for some reason

it was so realistic i could smell the trash that was littering the canals... oh wait thats just my room.

I like the crowbar drop sound, so very... metallic.

I think the music in both HL games has almost carved a niche for itself. The ambient/Soundscape stuff as well as the techno has always suited the games perfectly whilst sounding quite unique.

The explosions seem very unique, they are not the same generic ones you hear in other games and in crappy movies.

I really like all of the sounds. They are much better incorprated into the game than most other shooters.

Opposing Force is another matter entirely... It lacks the wonderful musical style of the HL games. Not that we can tell anymore, now that Steam defaults to the HL soundtrack in Op4...

But yes, the sounds of HL2 are superb and wonderfully chosen and mixed. No-one I know doesn't love the Metrocop's flatline sound. An inspired and chilling sound for certain. The weapons sound perfect, the music fits perfectly and the voice acting is probably amoung the best ever seen in the gaming industry. Kudos to Kelly Bailey and the rest of the Valve sound team.

Can someone tell me the filepath for the folder with all the HL2 music in. I really want it on my mp3 player so it seems like HL2 = RL.

The music is definitely different. But I like it. It goes well for the most part.

The sound effects are where the game truely shines. And was it just me or did HL2 have one of the best sound engines ever? It seemed like explosions and voices and other sounds were muffled and distorted perfectly. I love a game where you can tell how far away an enemy is by hearing the intensity of their gunfire.

I have to agree on the explosions there... they're great, powerful and distinct. The way it should be, and that concussion effect when you're too close is simply great too. HL2 has the best sound engine I've experienced yet.

Yeah, the sound really gets you into the mood of the game. Although I think Call of Duty also had excellent music. I'm thinking of the end of the Pegasus Bridge mission. I really felt like I was in a movie there.

I like the the Bridge on Half-Life 2, where you first step out underneath it, and it plays 19. Lab Practicum, very chilling.
I was a bit suprised they used some of the old tracks, but they fitted the events well.

That Questionable Ethics track that played when the dropships arrive at the lighthouse...that's a good track to fight with.

Sadly, the HL2 soundtrack found its way onto my iPod, and that was exactly what happened. Running for a train to the sounds of "CP Violation" seems just oh-so right.

Actually, one of the "problems" with the HL2 soundtrack, I feel, is that it's not exactly the kind of thing you can listen to for no reason. It's beautifully complimentary stuff, and is best experienced when you are doing something. Nine times out of Ten that will be by actually playing the game...

I like the Doppler-effect (that is the correct name for it right?) where gunfire in the distance gets muffeled to *pop pop* sounds.

When i first saw the movies on Highway 17 half a year before the release i was amazed by the explotion sound when gordon picked up the combine ball and threw it in the cannyon, followed by a echo explotion, awesome, and when i got the game it was even better, love all the sounds

As has been said, the thing that really stood out for me was the explosions. They didn't sound Hollywood, they sounded real. Stuff like that opened my eyes (ears? ) a little. Plus, I love the music Kelly does, I'm into that kindof stuff generally, so Hl's soundtrack in both 1 and 2 rocked for me.

( on a different note ) Nah PvtRyan, Doppler is the sound equivalent of red/blueshifting. Sirens changing pitch as they go past.

I think what you're refering to is the sound/enviroment reflection and refraction that goes on when hearing things far away. Don't thing there's an official name for it.

:D

The sound in HL2 was incredible. I was shocked that some reviewers seemed to mark it down a little because it "reused" sounds. I guess their fixation on its graphics caused them to not even notice the echoes, realistic distant "pop-pop-pop" gunfire, etc. Makes me wish I had surround sound.
