How many people think that their spelling has gotten worse over time?
Mine has,I constantly hit the wrong key to spell stuff wrong:frown:

Mine has definitely declined over time i have become reliant on spell checker now.

I've noticed that to. Especially when I'm typing. I also stumble over some words as well

Periods, spaces, and there is no such word as "worsening". I usually peck the keys so fast that my "the" is "teh", etc. *Incomplete sentences and periods as well Imporius! /grammar wh0re.

It hasn't had a significant decrease in puncuation and grammar, or content.

However since I use a sort of phonetic alphabet and cut words like "to" and "are" and "and" to take notes more effectively and quickly, sometimes I get mixed up.

I maintain my usually superior spelling accuracy. Sometimes I look up a word to see if I have spelled it correctly, but generally I spell properly the first time, and if I make a typing mistake I instinctually back up and correct it. You cannot trust spell checker 100% of the time, because the word I used above, instinctually, is showing up as spelled incorrectly, when in fact it's spelled correctly.

When I'm in chat or making posts, I don't always hold myself to rigid form(not that I have any professional form or anything), but when it counts I do aim to be one hundred percent accurate.

I do good in English except now my class is reading of Mice and Men,which has horrible grammar, and I see some major decreases in my grammar

My spelling is a helluva lot better now than it was before I'd started posting regularly on message boards. That could, however, be more of an age thing.

A lot of books have bad grammar depending on who's speaking in the book.
That's a very good book by the way.

Oh, and it's "I do well" not "I do good" *wink* :P

ps- thanks for sigging me!

I have no grammar skills....:(

Lol, I am quite bad at times myself.

A good way is to spell check/grammar check most everything you type for a while, it constantly reminds you of errors, so you get used to fixing them on your own.

the thread title is the best display of irony ever

i guess its about the same except for learning about bigger and cooler words now and then

Seriously, you're all crazy.

Only crazy people lose their spelling over time.

I cant say that I've lost any spelling/grammar ability. I certainly havent gained any, but I havent lost any either. Most typos I make are simply keyboard miss-hits and I can usually 'feel' that I did something wrong and immediately fix it. Some words though, I just cant be arsed to spell right, and just let firefox do it.

I've always been good at spelling. Oh God, I miss my 100% scores on my spelling tests...:dork:

My spelling has never been very good, but with the use of a spell checker it has been improving for quite some time now since I force myself to take note of the mistakes it highlights (compared to mindlessly correcting them).

Yes, my spelling has been getting worse with computers, I'm getting reliant to automatic spell-checking. Actually, a teacher of mine, a professional screenwriter, told me he had the same problem so I guess it's a side-effect of the advancements of technology, like how nobody remembers phone numbers by heart any more. So, we can have a philosophical discussion about having computers do work humans did once and in what ways does that affect the human mind.

I disagree, my spelling has got better after bieng part of forums, mostly because of Samon's hard grammer nazism - er, hard coaching.

Well, the end-results don't change, but if for some reason I had to write something without using my dictionaries and automatic spell-checking, I'd at least stop once in a while to think about spelling and/or make ridiculous mistakes. By the way, the kind of mistakes spell-checking can't detect are the ones I have recently started making more frequently.

I've noticed that, as i've matured, my grammar has followed suit.

Now that you mention it though, my spelling has actually gotten quite a bit worse.

Your "spelling" ****ing blows.

I don't understand you people. Surely the constant typing and whatnot should logically be improving your spelling? :/

No, because each time you make a mistake, you don't actually have to do anything yourself to fix it. The correction is almost always a red wavy line, a right-click and a left-click away ;)

I always correct myself. And don't use crappy programs like Word. *shudders at the word*

Google's handy if I don't know exactly how to spell a word.

Then stop doing that, just backspace and type it correctly! D:

But why? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having machines complementing humans? Since a computer can do the job better than I will ever be able to, due to the way it's made, is it really necessary for me to know how to spell everything correctly?

For situations when you're minus a computer, it's always good to know how to spell correctly.

I usually only mess up on more challenging words. But sometimes I make stupid mistakes like rediculous instead or ridiculous.

I've always been quite good at spelling, seeing as French and English were the only things I was good at in school, but I do think being out of practice makes me think twice about spellings. I do a mostly practical course at uni, so when I come to write an essay I think I have to work a bit harder now.

I use the spell checker because like everyone I'm prone to making the occasional mistake. I can spell perfectly fine and correct myself often when typing instead of relying on spell check. But when something slips by unnoticed I'm far too lazy to go back and fix it manually.

What course do you do?

If you want people to respect you, than yeah.

IMHO anybody who can't spell properly without a computer has already failed at life.
