I was wondering if it is possible to create some sort of Jetpack mod/addon for Halflife 2 (deathmatch). I haven't seen a 3D game yet that has this as a feature (done properly). It would be great if Gordon could go airborn and shoot enemies from the sky. The Source engine is perfect for it, since it can render large areas.

The only decent game where the gameplay is based around a character with a jetpack is the classic Amiga game called Exile. Read my review here: http://www.lemonamiga.com/reviews/view.php?id=43

I've always thought that this game should be done in 3D. Coincedently this game revolves around physics and gravity as well (and artificial lifeforms), just like Halflife 2. The difference is that this is a 2D game.

Anyways, is it possible/hard to create a Jetpack mod?

Play natural selection, and advance the jet pack. I think they did it pretty well. As bliink said, it shouldn't be very hard.

there is a 3d game with jetpacks and its Alien vs Predator, the marines can have the jet :>
and isnt there some jet in Tribes too ?

Would it be possible to create a level the size of this:

It's the map I've made of the game. As you can tell the level is based around a cave system (not a large out-door area), so theoretically it only has to render small sections of the caves. The problem is that it has to keep the entire geometry data in memory, and it only has to render the sections that are appropriate, while still having the ability to 'teleport' to any part of the level, seamless. Not sure how the 'portal technology' works for Halflife 2, but can this be modeled as one big level?

As for existing games such as Tribes using a jetpack, that's not my idea of proper use of the feature.

haha, one level. Yeah right. Good luck with that.

I'd say, make each part a different bsp, and then when the player steps onto a teleporter, just have it load up that level.

Probably the only way to do it.

But still judging by the size of that picture, it'd take you 126137.37271 years to finish making the map anyway. I'm sure Half-Life 49 will support maps that big, but right now, you're out of luck.
