latency and lagging

My latency is usually in the mid 100"s. I notice a lot of lag, especially when I come face to face with an opponent. I am not sure how correlated latency is with lagging, but I see that the more successful players always have low latency.
I have a 2.4GB, 1024Ram, nvidia fx5700e, audigy ls, comcast broadband and am running directx 9.0c.
I tried disabling my McAfee firewall and it actually helped some, but I am still well over 100 and still have a lot of lag.
Probably some simple answer that I do not know about.
Any help?

Latency ivolves the distance usually from the server you join and the speed of your int. usually i play some german servers with no lag ,with a ping of 125 to 150. Iplay a texas server alot with a ping of 45 and still get lag sometimes havent figured that one out yet. I think it may be the server and not my comp or the int i use.
