so I played HL2 and Source problem free for 2 months when they were released now I reinstalled them 3 days ago and they unlocked and updated fine but neither will launch I checked the valve support forum and the only suggestions I saw were to update VIA motherboard drivers, Videocard drivers, or DirectX so I updated all 3 which were already all up to date... and they still won't launch it starts the launch and HL2.exe appears in my processes list but it takes 00 cpu and nothing launchs... I sent a support ticket in but I have no response and it's been 3 days so figured I would try here. any suggestions?

tech specs. Sager 4750
VIA motherboard
AMD 64 3400+
1024 400mhz DDR
80 gig 7200rpm
Radeon 9700 128 Mobile
Windows XP Service Pack 2

Latest DirectX, Radeon Mobile, and VIA drivers...

Radeon Mobile's sometime tend to screw up sometimes (the drivers aren't updated a lot), so that might be your problem.

ATI mobile drivers are at the same version as desktop drivers...

Ah :p

Have you tried Omega drivers? (Alternative drivers for ATi)
I don't know if they'll work though, so watch out.

I've used Omega in the past when ATI stopped producing mobile drivers I was unhappy with their "glitches" and ended up just sticking with outdated drivers until ATI produced mobile drivers again

the main problem I'm having is I played the game from the day it came out until about 2 months after it came out with none of the problems others were having so what updates have radically changed things that would make it not even launch?

Oh, have you tried turning off HDR in video options?

no I tried Omega drivers did nothing but I haven't uninstalled them yet however if I use the framerate trick of killing explorer after loading the launch program for a game the game will run just fine... so double-u tee ef mate... the minimum reqs are

1.2 GHz Processor - I have 3 times that.
256MB RAM - 4 times that.
DirectX 7 capable graphics card - DirecX 9 compatible.
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98 - XP SP2
Mouse - Razer Copperhead
Keyboard - Integrated Laptop
Internet Connection - 8000/768

and the game will now only run if I kill explorer?

Microsoft is evil :p

Well, you know what they say:
The Shens works in mysterious ways.

meh microsoft hasn't been evil since about 95 thats when they started donating mass amounts to charity and giving their employees great pay and the best benefits in the industry granted their software still sucks but at this point if you like compatibility you pretty much are required to use it or use linux and download a ton of third party programs to make windows programs work on it... sadly the only reason I still use windows is because my all time favorite game "SubSpace" now "Continuum" won't play on anything except windows regardless of what you try
