I was just wondering, if you have a faster computer, does it give you fewer loading screens? Not only are they annoying in general, but it ticks me off with things like starting a cool song but having to cut off 30 seconds later.

No, it gives you loading screens where the game loads a new map. The big difference is, of course, the faster your CPU, the shorter those loading pauses will be.

One of the advantages will be is that we will play HL2 with barely any pauses at all in, say, 3 years. Then, those loading pauses would probably be around 5 seconds. Or, HL1 loading pauses are now non-existient - basically, Loading appears, and the game continues the next second.

Gives me nostalgia... I remember where I would wait several minutes for Doom2 to load and then for levels to load :D.

Barely any pauses would be cool.

I know it will load faster, but will it load fast enough for the music to keep going afterward? I wish it would :(

Edit: 300'th post!

The reason the music doesn't run anymore is, I think, not the load speed. I think, when you load levels, the game resets sounds that are playing. I may be wrong on that, however.

Anyway, even if you buy a 3.6 GHz machine now, you won't notice such a tremendeous improvements. There will still be loading pauses. However, on a 7 GHz machine in a few years, there will be no pauses.

Well for now, I'll work with the Athlon 64 4000 that will be in my new comp.

That should be absolutely enough for you not to have the game broken up too much by pauses.

By the way, I can't remember many places with music playing near a loading screen. And when it starts playing, just don't hurry too much so you don't get to the next loading :D.

EDIT: According to Doom3 benchmarking, the Athlon-64 4000 is indeed better than the 3800, despite being clocked at the same speed. And, the performance is noticeably better than that on a P4 3.2 GHz.

If they can get to 7GHz. I heard the Intel is having a hard time reaching 4GHz.

I ran HL2 on a 2.6ghz, 512mb, 9600xt and it took about 30sec for the main menu to load up. After installing a further 1gb of ram and making the heapsize 512mb, I almost halved the loading times. My performance also dramatically increased, meaning I was able to play the game at 1024x720 high details with full AA and AF.

This Dell has a 2.8 Pentium 4. I think Athlons and p4's can be compared like if a p4 has 3.2 ghz, that would equal a 3200 Athlon.
