Map Making

Since google isn't very easy to find things with when you want specifics...
I would like to know if anyone can recommend to me a set of map making tools with which I could create single-player maps in a campaign-like setting (eg, the HL2 maps linking together). If this is way out of my league please tell me, I'm still trying to figure out how this commmunity and the tools are set up.

For getting maps to load when you reach a point on another map, you might wanna talk to one of the big mod makers, as they can do that...
