Map size!

I was digging up through the valve info thread and found this cool little picture.

Shows how the original max map size for half life compared to the new half life 2 max map size.

Seems some battlefeild maps are possible.

You could even reduce the size of the characters/vehicles and make it like a whole planet.....hmmm.....

I don't know the size of a BF in real life, but a HL2 map is only 1,5*1,5*1,5 miles at standard scaling.
Though, you can scale your objects 32 times smaller, and still be psycichally simulated. Which allows for something like 50*50*50 miles in mapsize.

Wrong. They are 0.5 miles per side. I'll do the math for you people again.

+/- 16384 units = 32768 units (inches)
32768 / 12 inches per foot = 2730 feet
2730 feet / 5280 feet per mile = .517 miles

Half a mile per side is nowhere near the size of BF1942 maps. It would be difficult just to take off or land a plane in that much space.

EDIT: HL1 maps are about 1/8 of a mile per side. HL2 maps will be about 1/2 mile per side. You can walk 4 times as far. I think that's a nice size for a map, but it's nowhere near the size of most BF1942 maps. For some reason people see that graphic and think "Holy Monkey Love, 64 times bigger! That's about the size of Earth!" Try not to confuse volume with surface area people.
