Mass Effect 2 isn't even out yet and I'm already pumped holy shit.

US, January 8, 2010 - Sure, yes, we know -- Mass Effect 2 ships for Xbox 360 on January 26, just a few short weeks from now. But Mass Effect 2 is old news! We want to know about Mass Effect 3. (Note: Mass Effect 2 is not actually old news. Save your hate mail.) At CES 2010 in Vegas this week, we had Mass Effect 3 on the brain and we begged BioWare project manager Casey Hudson to tell us all about it. He didn't. But he did speak vaguely about the final chapter in the epic trilogy.

"We are already at work on Mass Effect 3," he said, adding, "Building the first bits of the story, putting that together."

Simultaneously, though, BioWare is also working on downloadable content to extend the life and replay value of Mass Effect 2.

"There will be great downloadable content throughout the time that Mass Effect 2 is out there while people are waiting for the third one. You'll always have great stuff. New adventures to play. New things to do," he noted.

So just how soon after the release of Mass Effect 2 will we get that DLC?

"We don't have anything specifically announced yet, but we basically plan for DLC pretty shortly after the release of the game and then a pretty intense schedule of downloadable content throughout," he said. "This is one of the big improvements that we've been able to do for Mass Effect 2. Lots of DLC and lots of really high quality DLC that players can look forward to."

Mass Effect 2 took two years to complete and it already had its predecessor in place as a foundation for engine, story, characters and so on. So the big question, will Mass Effect 3 take another two years or more and if so, might it arrive on some still-unannounced successor to 360 instead? Probably not.

"We always wanted to make sure that we got the entire trilogy of games done within this console's life cycle. We didn't want to take forever with it," clarified Casey. "So we definitely want to make Mass Effect 3 a fairly short turnaround, but also being that it needs to be a tremendous and epic conclusion to the trilogy."

So what can we expect from Mass Effect 3 when it finally does arrive?

"I think the exciting thing in the final chapter of the series is going to be just seeing where everything goes that we started," said Casey, remaining vague. "With Mass Effect and now Mass Effect 2, you'll see when you play it, all of these threads keep going. And not only that, all of the choices you've made too. You made choices in Mass Effect and you'll see those in Mass Effect 2. And it just cascades. And people will see that by the time you finish Mass Effect 2, you'll know that it's your universe -- everything is the way you set it out -- and that all of these things get to come to fruition and some kind of ending in the final chapter."

wasn't it painfully obvious this was a trilogy. also this is like people yelling "OMG a Xbox 3 is in the works?? who would have thought!!"

The tide is in for Mass Effect threads then... and pretty early too.

Well no shit. I just thought it would be good to go ahead and post this since it would have been posted anyway.

Wtf. Also, I don't know if this is correct but I think another game series has done that before.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind a two year wait for ME3. Games like these can't be rushed.

As long as the end result is a whole bucket of awesome, of course.

When Mass Effect 1 was announced, it was announced that Mass Effect was from the get-go written and designed as a trilogy.:p

But I guess official confirmation of their commitment to it as a trilogy is nice..

Or something!

inb4 bioware is better at pumping out games belonging to the same series than valve

I hope they release more books.

Third book has just been announced.

Andddd.... it's not just the third game that is in production already.

"We're actually going to continue to use it for stuff and we're going to continue to make games there," Zeschuk said. "Believe me, we have our work cut out for us for the next little while getting Mass Effect 3 done after this. Don't worry if you love Mass Effect, there will be more Mass Effect in the future."

It ain't no thang bro. I've never actually read any of the books, but heard Ascension was good.

I recommend the books. They also flesh out Cerberus, which I have heard will be helpful in ME2.

p.s. Dragon Age was probably the most unpolished game I've played by Bioware, I really hope they aren't slacking.

i'd rather have them take an extra 6 months with the game and be very polished. Mass Effect 1 was pretty rough around the edges but overall an amazing experience
