In the PCgamer article, Gabe says that, and I quote

Anyone works or knows about a mod team with Valve support?

my guess is Sven Coop2
DOD is owned by valve (the team work at valve)
same deal for counter-strike

and Valve did state they would be working closely with the sven coop team to produce the "official" co op mod, kinda thing.

but in ther last interview Svencoop said nothing about Valve helping them, and they dont have the sdk.... so I dont see how much good a mentor could be at this point regardless.

As far as I know, nobody but Valve has the SDK at this point. Hopefully that will change at e3, eh? ;-)

the "mentor" would probably at the moment be in an advisory role. They'd email them and get answers quickly and to the point for what they need to know, such as does this do that or can this happen there and so on. Kinda like the info from Valve thread only more realistic and not wrapped in the publicity wrapper with vague answers such as not being entirely clear on the whole HDR issue. Those mod teams in question would get a proper answer.

I imagine.

Sven Coop for sure, they've already said they'll be getting help from Valve for making the co-operative play of Half-Life 2.

Didn't someone from VALVe say recently in the info from valve thread that some teams HAVE the SDK? They keep changing their comments on this like 4 times each day it seems...
