Mirrors anyone?

I recall in Blue Shift one of the level designers achieved the illusion of reflections, the flooring in some lab or other during the intro.

Think they just cloned and inverted the geometry etc but still, pretty clever :)

thats the exact image that made me say that source 1.0 has reflections. oh well..

I thought that lab had REAL reflections.
Still clever, yes.:cheese:

Do a little research first, mate. That's not Source 1.0 either, it's GoldSource.

Doing reflections for "real" is actually similar to the Blue Shift way - you just make the 3D engine draw it without having a template room on the other side of the wall.

I disagree. The first time I stepped in front of a mirror in Doom 3 my first thought was "Who's this ugly dickhead?" or something along those lines. When I looked into a puddle and saw my reflection if FEAR I though "Why am I in such a stupid-looking and awkward stance?". In Deus Ex and Duke Nukem 3D when I saw my reflection I thought "Why is my reflection of the way I'm holding a weapon completely different from my first-person view?". Seeing yourself distracts from the game and ruins immersion.

Plus, I think you can get away with picking up items and having them floating in front of player, but if you see that in a reflection it just looks utterly stupid.

And everytime I went into a bathroom I said, "where is the damn mirror" so they should have attempted something in such places with this

Did any of City 17 look like it would've had the luxery of a mirror?

I think hl did just fine without the mirrors. There's something disturbing about seeing your playing hero on the screen. I remember playing Duke Nukem 3D many a summers ago; I shot far too many times into the mirror before I realised I'm that buff over there.

THANK YOU! At least there is one intelligent person in here who doesn't just think: "Why don't we liek see Freeman in teh game?!" If you have been around for the past few years, read some VALVe interviews, done some research etc you would understand WHY VALVe did not model/let the player see Freeman. YOU ARE FREEMAN. I remember there was another topic like this some way back... I gave my reasons why VALVe intended for this whole dilemma to be so. Call me lazy, I just REALLY can't be bothered to repeat myself again. :hmph:

He looks at where he wants them to go. Pretty amazing that it works, actually!

Yeah, like somebody else said - use your imagination. Maybe Freeman doesn't use his mouth to command the rebels; maybe he uses hand signals. Have you ever played Rainbow Six: Vegas? The guy who you play as uses hand signals to command his squad. Like for example when you ask your squad to follow you, your hand and index-finger becomes visible on screen and performs this twirling motion, accompanied with the words spoken: "On me." I have a great passion for VALVe's creativity and quality. When you really think about this whole "Don't actually get to see Freeman" thing, you'll begin to understand how much time and thought VALVe put into this immersion factor. They would have considered what some of you are saying now, and weighed this against the affection of the player. I strongly believe they made the right decision; any other crappy company (EA?) would most likely have just said "Ah it doesn't matter, who cares about this immersion crap anyway? Let's get back to adding some more flashy, plasticity graphics." I guess it all comes down to personal opinion and liking; I can't change that. :(

Hell, maybe he has an LED display stuck to his chest which tells people what to do and where to go. :D

I don't think Gordon commands them.
Hell, he doesn't even want them behind him. There was nothing he could do to stop himself from becoming a messiah in the eyes of the rebels.
They just follow him around, shooting everything he shoots at.
They just stick to his ass like glue.
