so i was browsing another forum and came across this post:

That's right, Fight night and soccer both now..

you enter all of your details to register to play online thought ea's servers. Finally as a LAST step you have to give your email address and agree to be spammed by espn, or alternately you can opt to pay $2 not to give it to them.

What kind of BULLSHIT is this. If you don't give email, or pay 2 bucks, you can't play online with the game you JUST BOUGHT.

**** EA, yet again.

now, i don't play console games and don't own very many EA titles but wow.
so one either has to accept spam by ESPN or pay a $2 fee?? WTF.
im just glad i don't own very many EA titles...seriously, this is LAME if its true. :|

It's completely ridiculous in principle, but in practice people will just give phony information. It's a very bad step in the wrong direction though, especially considering these games cost like $50. Absolutely ridiculous.

It is true. I think I just gave 'em a fake email.

im sure most people with half a brain would but the fact still remains...EA is more money grubbing bunch of leechers than ever before. :| :frown:

If you use a fake email they'll get sent loads of "cannot be delivered" mails, haha.

How do you know they don't send an activation email...to which you have reply?

EDIT: I just realised that kinda fits into the Family Guy theme tune. TO WHICH YOU HAVE TO REPLYYYYYYYY

Just put your real email if you need to reply to an activation email. Then just block the address the spam is comming from.

'Tis greedy of EA though D:

EA used to be so great. Too bad they are such whores now. I guess its good they don't put out that much that I like! :D

Seriously, how the hell are they getting away with this?

I think it's time for more companies to take after Valve and give a big "f*ck you" to their publishers.

Some one is bound to spam EA's inbox with complaint's, then they either do something about it or continue to upset their customer's.

FFS. If I had broadband I'd never buy a Valve retail box again!

Eh.

EA don't run valve's online service  They charge for games they actually control.

Umm, I think what you're describing is illegal per the anti-spam legislation we have currently. Check on it. In the meantime, enter a BS address for now. (Or even better, find the EA customer support address.)

They are Valve's publishers, so every time someone buys a retail version of a Valve game EA gets money. That's why I said I would never buy a retail version if I had broadband.

I've hated them ever since the third harry potter game. Now I see my hate was well placed. hate.

......Why are people complaining about this? Its so easy to get around this is stupid they even tryed it. Create a email send it check it never use it again simple....

its all simple marketing folks (what im hoping to go into so it will be my ideas stealing your money or annoying you!!! :) )

EA are getting paid sponsership, therefore the company sponsoring them want to be able to send e-mails. If there was a free option out, people would want that, the sponsorship would be pretty useless and EA lose out on possible profits.

By charging to opt out of receiving mail, they still make money from that option and the chance that people will accept the mail is greater - sponsorship stays in tact, more profits and opportunities for the future as other companies see advertising possibilities!

By the way - why is no one complaining that ESPN are taking part in this...It could be their idea in the first place. Look at the advertising they are getting and its working - people are talking about it...even more advertising.

Also, they dont come across as the bad people because people are bashing EA! Now, theres my little rant...Hopefully it made sense!

Because people didn't pay ESPN $50 for this game. When you buy a game, the general understanding is that you buy everything in it. There are exceptions with MMOs where you pay for access to their server and expansions where you pay for content that wasn't in the original package. In this case people are quite literally paying more money (or getting spammed) to utilize a feature that was present in the game you bought ... and I don't believe they even noted this on the packaging.

And who cares about ESPN? ESPN is irrelevant, it could just have easily been Wal-Mart or 50 other major corporations. EA sold off pieces of their game in order to **** over their customers and squease out a little more profit. In addition to being bad business practice it's also unethical. EA are the ones that deserved to be "bashed" for this. I prefer boycotted.

ESPN is trying to get their target market with offers so going through a sports game is a logical marketing ploy.

And yes, business is about profit.

Of course it's about profit. If they can get away with it, ie. idiots keep buying their subpar yearly reiterations of games, then they should (and yeah, Fight Night falls into this category). However, people have a right to be pissed off about it. There was no warning of this, no disclosure whatsoever. It breaks from standard practices and violates the consumers trust. It's bad business.

How would you feel about buying a DVD and being able to watch the feature normally, but then have to submit to spam to view the special features? It wouldn't fly. How about the same movie being re-released every year with improved special effects and maybe a few more scenes? Wouldn't work either. Game consumers need to stop being so goddamn stupid and buying all this crap from EA. For gods sake another Madden game was one of the best selling games last year.

EA is partially at fault for this, ESPN is irrelevant. EA would have sold it to anyone willing to pay, ESPN happened to be that company. However the consumer bears the most guilt for this, allowing EA to push them as far making them pay to get out of being spammed ... to play a game they already purchased for $50.

oh i dont doubt at all that they would take any companies money - *cha ching!

It is bad practice, definately...Unfortunately, its only IF people stand up against it that it wont happen again...Right now its a gold mine and may be for the future.

Even though people know that the same games get rehashed year after year - they are still bought. EA has a monopoly to some extent...And its up to the consumer to do something about it.So what if you are playing with Rooney at Everton or Chelsea before they made another £100m worth of signings...

Hopefully things will not continue whereby agreements are snuck into games like this.

theres a fine line between making profits and outright money grubbing the customers...guess which category this $2 bullshit falls into.

ding...ding...ding, times up!
bottom line is its money grubbing from customers...and regardless of the emails being from ESPN or some other penis enlargement med ads and regardless of whether the fee being $2 or $10, its pathetic at best.

hey EA, time to get a bit more creative in ways to make money instead of this hand over fist routine? :flame:
