First Muslim Congressman Insists on Using Koran for Ceremonial Swearing-In

foxnews said:
The decision by Ellison, a Democrat, to use Islam's holy book for the ceremony instead of a Bible triggered an angry column by Dennis Prager on the Web site Townhall.com this week.

Prager headlined the post, "America, Not Keith Ellison, decides what book a congressman takes his oath on." He argued that using the Koran for the ceremony "undermines American civilization."

"Insofar as a member of Congress taking an oath to serve America and uphold its values is concerned, America is interested in only one book, the Bible," he wrote. "If you are incapable of taking an oath on that book, don't serve in Congress."

Conservative bloggers have picked up the criticism and run with it.

CNN comentator asks if the congressman is a spy/terrorist:

media matters said:
CNN's Beck to first-ever Muslim congressman: "[W]hat I feel like saying is, 'Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies' "

isnt swearing on the bible for a non christian useless? hey I'll swear on the bible if it gets me elected/out of prison sentence. I find this amusing ..especially since the conservatives/religious right are revealing their true colours/foaming at the mouth in outrage

Why, oh why, do you swear on a goddamn $17.99 book?

****ing conservatives.

There should be no "holy book" whatsoever in the chamber, and nobody in government should be sworn on any religious icon whatsoever. What bothers me here is that they require a swearing in at all.

But, if it must happen, then let every congressman have his own damn holy book, and allow all books to be used. In fact, why not swear people in on the gospel of the flying spaghetti monster? I would be equally as rediculous, equally idiotic as swearing in on the bible, the quaran or any other holy book.

$17.99 wha? you got ripped off ..they're free in every motel across canada ..useful for when you're tired of using the same old line: "oh yes!! jesus h christ YES!!" :naughty:

I'm beginning to have strong feelings for Jon Stewart

Wow that guy is an idiot for accusing him of working for the terrorists.

That's basically accusing every muslim american of doing the same. BECAUSE HE IS MUSLIM.

My god.

But anyways, who cares if he swears on the Koran, as long as he doesn't try to pass a motion that all the others swear on it too. I'd rather he swear on the one that means more to him than not.

You shouldn't have to swear on any religious book, but if he wants to do so with the Koran, let him. Otherwise, what are you achieving? More pissed off muslims? I'm sure that plan of action will work out brilliantly.

what about if the person swear in the holy book of its religion,if is a muslim then it will swear in the koran

and I found stupid that coment about "omfg dont tell me you work for our enemyes?" if the majority of americans think that way then muslim should leave the USA

When I get elected I'll be sworn in on a copy of Origin of Species.

Either that or Anal Sluts 7 on DVD.

"Finally a guy who says what people, who aren't thinking, are thinking"
Classic

I wonder which would cause the greatest uproar? ;)

Hmm. I can't decide whether or not I would choose to swear myself in with Raising The Bar or The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Definitely pick the porno.

We've got enough people improperly equating science with the bible, as it stands.

As far as this goes, it makes goddamn sense. Why on earth is it only the bible when the goverment is secular and the country is (at least somewhat) diverse?
Looks like someone's called bullshit on the whole stupid process.

I'd swear on a DVD of the movie Code 46, which is awesome.

Eh, well, the 8 year old copy that I have says on the back: "18230 Won (equivalent to about $17.9856......), Printed in Daegu, XX Productions inc."

But I got it for free anyway :p

I'd swear on Dr Strangelove. It has everything a movie should have.

A cowboy riding a nuke all the way to Armageddon? Shit, that's hot.

Why swear oath on a religious book in a secular country? We swear oaths on the law, you should do the same.

Why are bibles/religious texts used at all in governmental processes? don't you have a seperation of church + state?

Swearing to the Bible? How does that work?

"Go eat a dick Jesus, goddamn fag!"

while holding your hand on it?

Why are bibles/religious texts used at all in governmental processes? don't you have a seperation of church + state?
Hey, America is one nation under God.

And it's been that way ever since 1957

The separation doesn't really matter when the majority of Americans (or at least of those in power) couldn't give a shit.

Hence why I think we need a gosh-durn upheaval with fire and pitchforks.

Do they still burn people for being witches over there?

Not openly. Technically it's illegal nowadays.

But every few years, on a full moon, you can hear the shrill cries of a woman coming from George Bush's ranch. :O

Agreed, if they do let him swear on the koran at least he'll have some religious/moral incentive to do what he feels is right( not that the oath should make any diff to begin with).

I can't wait to hear Oreilly's take on this.

Oaths, in court or during swearing in, have to be made either on a Bible or a secular oath. The congressman just wishes to replace the Bible with the Qu'ran. His only other alternative would have been a secular oath, which apparently he doesn't want.

Goddamn Christians, always thinking they're the center of the universe...

Sheesh, when Christians and US Congressmen come together, you'd never know the UDHR existed...

uhm, conservative ppl in all religions always think they're "the center of the universe". This goes for Islamic and Jewish countries too (haven't heard much "noise" from Hinduism or Buddhism).

preceded by a "not tonight laura I'm too drunk to perform"

Still doesn't answer the question as to why a bible or religious text of any kind should be used.. :x

I think, and this is just guessing, it's because it shows that they will not violate the sanctity of their vows and they will swear too, or on, something which embodies their beliefs in this matter.

Uh.

Yeah.

Jon Stewert was a classic. :D

Bah, stupidity running rampant.

But if I got elected, I'd propably swear on a copy of K. Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions or Cat's Cradle.

Heh, I'd swear on a jar of pickles! :D

What? It makes as much sense as swearing on any sort of religious text!

Good point.

The decision by Ellison, a Democrat, to use Islam's holy book for the ceremony instead of a Bible

Thats what you guys are missing. He was'nt personally saying he'd rather use the Quran for himself, but instead, everyone for the swearing in. The people's country. I'm against any religious swearing in.
